He is best known for his coaching career at Karşıyaka and especially Göztepe Sports Clubs. He entered Turkish football history as the first coach to lead a Turkish club to the semifinals of European competitions. He also served on the board of directors and as vice president of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) during various periods. In addition to his playing and coaching career, he worked in insurance, sports journalism and briefly as a film actor. The TFF Board of Directors named the 2026-2027 Süper Lig season after him to honor the memory of technical figures and former national footballers who contributed to Turkish football. ### Early Life and Education Adnan Süvari was born on 17 December 1926 in Aydın. He completed his middle school education at Saint Joseph French High School and his high school education at Austrian High School. Thanks to this educational background, he grew up as an intellectual fluent in English, German, French and Italian. He pursued higher education at the İzmir Higher School of Economics and Commerce and graduated from there. During his student years he also engaged in basketball. After graduation he received training in textile engineering. ### Beginning of Sports and Professional Career Süvari’s sports career began with football in İzmir. He played for Göztepe Sports Club for exactly ten years and also represented İzmir Combined Team. After his playing career he started working at Yün Mensucat Factory, which won the İzmir championship in 1955. During this period the factory’s football team included Metin Oktay, one of the most renowned strikers in Turkish football. Süvari was sent to England by the factory’s manager to receive training in textile engineering. During his three-and-a-half-year stay in England he not only completed his textile education but also obtained coaching training and conducted studies on football theory and training methodology. Upon returning to Türkiye, after the closure of Yün Mensucat Factory and its football team, he embarked on a professional coaching career. ### Coaching Career #### Karşıyaka Period Adnan Süvari began his professional coaching career at Karşıyaka Sports Club. He assumed his duties on 1 July 1959 and remained in office until 13 November 1960. During his approximately one-and-a-half-season tenure (52 matches) at the club, he discovered and developed an important goalscorer for Turkish football: Ogün Altıparmak. To enhance Altıparmak’s positioning and scoring ability, Süvari implemented a “shot wall” training method. #### Assistant Coach at Göztepe and Transition to Head Coach After leaving Karşıyaka, Süvari joined Göztepe Sports Club. From 1 January 1961 to 30 June 1961 he served as assistant coach to head coach András Kuttik. When Kuttik left to join Beşiktaş, Süvari assumed the head coaching position. His brother Sebahattin Süvari’s election as president of Göztepe Club also played a role in his appointment. Süvari’s primary goal at Göztepe was to pass on the coaching methods he had learned in England to the players he had previously played with and trained in his neighborhood. #### Göztepe Head Coaching and National Achievements Adnan Süvari led Göztepe through a long and highly successful period that became the most successful era in the club’s history. He first served as head coach from 1 July 1961 to 30 August 1963, overseeing 25 matches. After a brief interval, he returned to the position on 5 August 1964 and remained in charge without interruption until 30 June 1971, managing 45 matches during this second tenure. The club won the Turkish Cup twice during this period and also claimed the Presidency Cup at the national level. Although official records list one Presidency Cup title, some other sources report two. Throughout the 1960-1970 period under Süvari’s management, Göztepe consistently ranked among the top teams in the Turkish league. #### Playing Philosophy and the “Total Football” Approach Adnan Süvari is regarded as a visionary coach who introduced modern football concepts to Turkish football. Shortly after taking charge at Göztepe, he adopted the 4-3-3 formation inspired by the 1962 World Cup champions Brazil as the team’s standard system. He designed the team’s tactics around the performances of the era’s leading goalscorer, Fevzi Zemzem. Süvari instilled in his players a collective understanding of the game and became Turkey’s pioneering practitioner of what would later be known internationally as “Total Football,” popularized by Rinus Michels with the Netherlands national team. Süvari’s football philosophy was based on three key principles: quick ball movement, exploiting open spaces and away-game strategy. In this system, players had no fixed positions and were expected to fill every vacant area on the pitch. Former player Ceyhan Yazar noted that Süvari taught them precisely where to move offensively during attacks. Fevzi Zemzem stated that the style of play Süvari taught them was later taught in coaching courses approximately 15 years later under the term “modern football.” Another important principle of Süvari’s management was prioritizing team play over individual brilliance. He prevented players from standing out individually and allowed no player except captain Gürsel to dominate the spotlight, keeping the focus entirely on the Göztepe team. Süvari regularly met with the press to share his strategies and displayed exceptional courtesy and fairness toward his players. His former players recalled that Süvari never used profanity or insults during training or matches, teaching them not only football but also sportsmanship. #### Historic Achievements in European Competitions Adnan Süvari made historic achievements for Turkish football with Göztepe in European competitions. Under his leadership, the yellow-red team achieved the following international results: - **UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Semifinal (1968-1969):** Göztepe advanced to the semifinals by eliminating Marseille, Arges Pitesti, OFK Belgrade and Hamburg (by walkover). Although they were eliminated by Hungarian side Újpest in the semifinals, this achievement represented the highest stage any Turkish club had reached in European competitions up to that point. Adnan Süvari thus became the first Turkish coach to take a Turkish club to the semifinals of a European competition. - **UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Quarterfinal (1969-1970):** In the following season, Göztepe advanced to the quarterfinals after eliminating Welsh side Cardiff City. They were then eliminated by Italian club Roma, which featured Fabio Capello. Süvari’s proficiency in foreign languages also attracted attention during international matches. After a European Cup match against Luxembourg’s Union, he delivered his post-match press conference statements directly in French and Italian, causing surprise in the foreign press, which subsequently referred to him as an “intellectual coach.” ### Head Coach of the Türkiye National Football Team While continuing his duties at Göztepe, Adnan Süvari was appointed head coach of the Türkiye national football team on 31 August 1966. He held both positions simultaneously until 17 December 1968, totaling approximately two years. He coached the national team in 16 matches. Under Süvari’s leadership, Türkiye achieved notable results, including a 2-0 victory over the Soviet Union, one of the strongest teams of the era. However, he failed to achieve consistent results with the national team, and a heavy 8-0 defeat to Poland occurred during his tenure. Süvari became a target of criticism from the sports public for excluding star players of the time such as Can Bartu and Sanlı Sarıalioğlu from the national squad in order to preserve team cohesion. ### Departure from Göztepe and Later Periods Süvari’s long tenure at Göztepe ended following the death of his brother Sebahattin Süvari, who was club president, in 1970. After this loss, Süvari largely stepped away from coaching. However, in subsequent years he returned for brief interim stints at Göztepe. He served as head coach for short periods between 1 July 1974 and 30 June 1975, and again from 9 December 1981 to 3 January 1982. During his final stint in 1974-1975, he managed the team in one official match. ### Administrative Roles within the Turkish Football Federation Beyond his coaching career, Adnan Süvari served in senior administrative roles within the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) for many years, contributing to Turkish football in governance. His roles within the federation, in chronological order, were as follows: - **Board of Directors Member (1964-1965):** He first served as a member of the TFF Board of Directors under President Muhterem Özyurt from 9 May 1964 to 3 May 1965. - **Vice President (1976-1977):** From 26 November 1976 to 1 June 1977, he served as Vice President of the federation under President Füruzan Tekil. - **Board of Directors Member (1980):** Finally, he served on the board under President Mazhar Zorlu from 25 July 1980 to 9 September 1980, contributing to football administration. ### Life After Football, Journalism and Cinema Experience During periods away from coaching and in the later stages of his life, Süvari worked in the insurance sector. He also contributed to sports media, beginning a column for the newspaper Milliyet. His first sports-related column was published on 29 August 1974. In 1974, Süvari took a brief acting role in cinema. He appeared as a guest actor in the film *Uyanık Kardeşler*, starring Kemal Sunal and Zeki Alasya, during training scenes. His funeral was held in İzmir, where he was buried at the Hacılarkırı Cemetery in the Pınarbaşı neighborhood. ### Legacy and Preservation of His Name The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) Board of Directors initiated a practice of naming Süper Lig seasons to honor unforgettable contributors to Turkish football, including technical staff and former national players.
