[YouTube Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPglcD0Xzxk) *Those Who Did Not Fit in the Coffin: Martyr Ahmet Altun (Yeni Şafak)* ### Early Life and Education Ahmet Altun was born in Kahramanmaraş to Elife and Osman Altun. He completed his primary and secondary education in Kahramanmaraş and graduated from Türkoğlu Anatolian High School.[^1] Although he was accepted into the mathematics teaching program for higher education, he chose a career in policing due to family guidance and his interest in the special operations branch, where his uncle served.[^2] ### Professional Career After joining the security forces, Altun completed specialized training in the Special Operations branch. He spent the final seven months of his two-year career serving with the Special Operations Branch of the Van Provincial Security Directorate, participating in various operational activities during his tenure.[^3] ### Operational Duty and Death On 15 July 2018, an operation was launched against a residence in the Bostaniçi neighborhood of İpekyolu district in Van, which had been identified as a cell used by members of the separatist terrorist organization PKK.[^4] During the operation, an explosive hand grenade thrown by terrorist group members detonated, causing shrapnel to strike Altun in the carotid artery, resulting in severe injuries.[^5] He was transported to Van Özel Lokman Hekim Hospital for treatment but succumbed to his wounds on Wednesday, 18 July 2018, despite medical intervention.[^6] ### Funeral and Burial Following his death, the first ceremony was held at the Van Gendarmerie Public Order Helicopter Fleet Command, after which his body was transported by air to his hometown of Kahramanmaraş.[^7] The funeral ceremony, held at Veysel Karani Mosque in the Önsen neighborhood of Onikişubat district in Kahramanmaraş, was attended by local civil administration officials, members of parliament, military personnel, and citizens. After the funeral prayer, he was buried in Önsen Cemetery.[^8] ### Preserving His Memory After his death, his family home in Kahramanmaraş was converted into a museum, coordinated with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, under the name “Martyr Ahmet Altun Memorial and Culture House.”[^9] The museum displays documents from Altun’s educational life, personal belongings, and professional materials.
