He participated in the [Battle of Sakarya](/en/detay/ahmet-muzaffer-kilic-7fa8c/llms.txt) and the Great Offensive as a division commander, and after the war held various staff positions in the army, rising to the rank of major general. After retiring in 1931, he served as a member of parliament for Kütahya, Bursa and Gaziantep in the [Grand National Assembly of Türkiye](/en/detay/milli-mucadele/llms.txt); he died in 1957. ### **Service in the Ottoman Army (1901–1918)** Âşir Atlı, born in Kilis in 1881, entered the War School in 1901 and graduated in 1903 with the rank of Second Lieutenant. He completed the War Academy in 1906 as an outstanding captain and began service in the 9th Division, 35th Regiment. In 1907 he was sent to Yemen and served in the staff of the Yemen General Forces and the Composite 3rd Division. He participated in the Tripolitania War and was promoted to Senior Captain in 1912, and to Major in 1914. In 1915 he served in the General Staff of the Iraq and Surrounding Regions Command and as Head of the Operations Section of the 6th Army. In 1916 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. From 1917 to 1918 he commanded the 1st Regiment and the 2nd Division and served as Governor of Süleymaniye, actively serving on the Iraq Front. ### **Service During the National Struggle and Before the Republic (1919–1923)** In 1919 he was appointed Commander of the 23rd Division in Western Anatolia to oppose the Greek advance. In 1920 he became Commander of the National Forces of the Eastern Front of İzmir and played an influential role in organizing militia forces. That same year he was appointed Governor and Commander of Antalya. While in this position, he reported to central authorities on supply movements in areas under Italian occupation. In 1921 he was promoted to Colonel due to his successes in the Battle of Sakarya and was appointed Commander of the 16th Division. He participated with his division in the Great Offensive and the [Commander-in-Chief Battle](/en/detay/commander-in-chief-law-d9326/llms.txt), achieving notable success; for this he was awarded a certificate of appreciation and the Independence Medal by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye. In 1923 he assumed the post of Chief of Staff of the 2nd Army, followed by that of the 3rd Army. ### **Military and Political Career in the Republican Era (1925–1950)** In 1925 he was promoted to Major General and appointed Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of National Defense. In 1928 he again became Commander of the 23rd Division and for a time served as Acting Commander of the 4th Corps. In 1931 he was appointed Commander of the 7th Division and retired the same year upon his own request. After retirement, he served as a member of parliament for Kütahya from 1942 to 1943, and for Bursa and Gaziantep from 1946 to 1950 in the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye. He was a member of the National Defense Council; although he proposed a bill in 1947 to elevate the Chiefs of General Staff to the rank of Marshal, the proposal was rejected. He also spoke in parliament on matters concerning military laws and organizational reforms. ### **Death and Honors** Âşir Atlı died in Istanbul on 23 October 1957. His body was initially buried at Karacaahmet Cemetery and later transferred to the State Cemetery of Honor in 1988. He was married and had three children. He spoke Adyghe, French and German.
