# Ayşe Şekibe Şekib İnsel

## Article Content

Following the granting of women’s right to be elected as members of parliament on 5 December 1934, she was elected as a member of parliament for Bursa from the [Republican People’s Party](/en/detay/progressive-republican-party-b0636/llms.txt) in the 1935 elections and served in the [5th Term of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye](/en/detay/turkish-women-during-the-national-struggle-period-/llms.txt). She worked in the Agriculture Council, conducted various studies in her region, and contributed to the reports prepared. İnsel, whose political life was limited to this period, passed away on 29 March 1970.

### **Education and Family Life**

Ayşe Şekibe was born in Istanbul. Her father was Dr. [Şekip Bey](/en/detay/ahmet-bey-lakse-6bf90/llms.txt) and her mother was [Fatma Şefika Hanım](/en/detay/fatma-sahin-40b64/llms.txt). Her family originated from the village of İsaveren (İsaören) in İnegöl. She completed her primary and secondary education at the Istanbul School of Girls’ Industries and later at the German School. During her youth she lived in Istanbul and acquired a good command of the German language. In 1905 she married Mehmet Kemalettin Bey, with whom she had a son named Yusuf Cemil Akkavuk. She spent a period in Germany to ensure her son’s education.

### **Farming and Local Recognition**

Before being elected as a member of parliament, she engaged in farming in the village of İsaveren. During this time she established close ties with the villagers and became familiar with their social and economic challenges. She became a respected and trusted figure in the local community.

### **Membership in the 5th Term of the Grand National Assembly**

After women were granted the right to stand for election as members of parliament, she was listed as the Republican People’s Party’s candidate for Bursa on 5 February 1935 and won 1,051 votes in the elections held on 8 February 1935, thereby earning a seat in the [5th Term of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye](/en/detay/1924-constitution-34745/llms.txt). She took her oath on 1 March 1935 and received her official certificate on 7 March.

### **Parliamentary and Constituency Activities**

During her term she served as a member of the Agriculture Council. Although she did not speak in the General Assembly, she undertook extensive visits throughout Bursa and its surrounding areas. In the summer of 1935, together with other Bursa deputies, she visited İnegöl, Orhaneli, Mudanya, Gemlik, Karacabey and other districts, contributing to the preparation of a report on the region’s needs and problems.

The main issues addressed in the report included: increasing the number of population officers, repairing educational facilities, treating diseases affecting olive trees and vineyards, combating malaria, addressing the shortage of veterinarians, overcoming customs restrictions, meeting the need for judicial personnel, and proposing solutions to diseases threatening agricultural production.

### **End of Political Career and Death**

[Ayşe Şekibe Şekib İnsel](/en/detay/ayse-sekibe-sekib-insel-ab109/llms.txt) served only in the 5th Term of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye and was not nominated for the 6th Term. She passed away on 29 March 1970.
