Crazy Heart (TV Series)

Deli Yürek is an action, drama, and political television series that premiered on Show TV on 5 October 1998 and concluded on ATV on 24 June 2002. Written by Raci Şaşmaz, Ömer Lütfi Mete and Bahadır Özdener, and directed by Osman Sınav, the series gained a wide audience by portraying the story of Yusuf Miroğlu, a soldier who returns to his neighborhood after completing his military service and finds himself drawn into a relentless struggle against organized crime.

Plot and Theme

Yusuf completes his military service as a commando in Southeastern Türkiye and returns home, where he is warmly welcomed by his family. While working as an engine mechanic in a repair shop, he is approached by Feraye, the daughter of a wealthy family, who brings her damaged car for repairs. When Yusuf delivers the car back to her mansion, he is struck by the contrast between his modest life and the opulence of her household. Hamit, a local mafia boss who frequently visits the neighborhood, becomes a pivotal figure in Yusuf’s life. During a visit to Hamit, Yusuf finds himself caught in an ambush.

I Lost Yusuf (Deliyürek)

In the early episodes of the series, Yusuf Miroğlu forms a group to combat the mafia and establishes a strict set of rules for its members. These rules eventually become known as the “Miroğlu Laws” and emerge as one of the defining elements of the series. Miroğlu’s laws define the moral boundaries within the show:

1. From this moment on, I am removing all the practices of your so-called world from circulation. I also prohibit the utterance of the word “racon.” Even if meant as mockery, you will not bring this word to your lips.

2. Even if hunger makes you gasp for breath, you will not ask for money from anyone other than me, under any name.

3. You will never gamble, not even for a game of backgammon with your soda.

4. You will not use a weapon under any circumstance except in self-defense.

5. From this moment on, you will sever all ties with anyone involved in drug trafficking, human trafficking, debt collection, protection rackets, extortion, stick-wielding, mediation, land grabbing, parking control, or bid rigging.

6. In this world, police, soldiers, bureaucrats, and politicians are neither your friends nor your enemies.

7. You will never lie to anyone under any circumstance.

8. You will forget every good deed you do, whether with me or without me, and never even think of mentioning it again.

9. No mercy or pardon will be granted to anyone among us who fails to abide by these laws.

Place in Popular Culture

Deli Yürek is not only a popular television production but also a vessel for social values, cultural codes, and traditional narrative structures. The character of Kuşçu exemplifies the archetypal wise elder found in oral culture. In episode 50, when Yusuf expresses resentment toward fate, Kuşçu advises him: “Be like vast oceans, Yusuf. Do not let a single stone disturb you. If others’ actions hurt you, it means you are shallow water.”^【1】
