Dicle University (DÜ)

Dicle University (DÜ) is a public university established in Diyarbakır in 1973. The institution, located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, conducts its educational, teaching, and research activities across campuses in Diyarbakır city center and surrounding districts.

History

The academic foundations of Dicle University were laid with the establishment of the Diyarbakır Faculty of Medicine in 1966 under Ankara University. The institution continued its development with the opening of the Faculty of Science in 1969 and was officially founded as "Diyarbakır University" by Law No. 1785 published in the Official Gazette on 30 November 1973. In accordance with Decree Law No. 41 enacted in 1982, the university's name was changed to "Dicle University". Since its founding, the university has fulfilled the higher education needs of the region while also serving as a regional center in health and science.

Campuses

The main campus of the university is situated on a 19,717-dönüm area along the banks of the Tigris River in Diyarbakır. The campus includes faculty buildings, administrative units, university hospitals, a central library, research centers, dormitories, and social facilities.^【1】 In addition to the main campus, buildings housing vocational schools are located in the districts of Bismil, Çermik, Çüngüş, Ergani, Kulp, Lice, and Silvan. Furthermore, Dicle Teknokent operates within the campus as a technology development zone.

Student Profile

More than 40,000 students are enrolled at Dicle University at the associate, undergraduate, and graduate levels.^【2】 Admissions are conducted based on results of the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) organized by the Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Additionally, there are students admitted through special talent exams and international student admission guidelines.

Undergraduate Programs

Undergraduate programs are conducted across various faculties and colleges. The Ziya Gökalp Faculty of Education offers a broad range of teacher training programs including German Language, Geography, Science Education, Primary Mathematics Education, Preschool Education, Classroom Teaching, Social Studies, History, and Turkish Language Education. The Sezai Karakoç Faculty of Literature offers programs in Arabic Language, Archaeology, Contemporary Turkish Dialects, Philosophy, English Language, Kurdish Language, Psychology, Sociology, and History. The Faculty of Science provides education in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Molecular Biology and Genetics.

In the fields of engineering and architecture, programs include Computer Engineering, Electrical-Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Architecture. Undergraduate health education is provided by the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Veterinary Medicine, as well as the Departments of Nutrition and Dietetics and Nursing within the Atatürk Faculty of Health Sciences.

The Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences includes programs in Economics, Business Administration, Health Management, Political Science and Public Administration, and Social Work. The Faculty of Communication offers programs in Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising, and Radio Television and Cinema. The Faculty of Theology offers a program in Theology. The Faculty of Agriculture includes agricultural programs such as Horticultural Crops, Plant Protection, Agricultural Machinery, Field Crops, and Animal Science. Additionally, the College of Civil Aviation offers Aviation Management, and the College of Physical Education and Sports offers Sports Management.

Associate Degree Programs

Associate degree programs, conducted through vocational schools, aim to train technical personnel in technical, health, and social fields. The Atatürk Vocational School of Health Services offers health-focused programs including Oral and Dental Health, Anesthesia, Dental Prosthetics, Dialysis, Physical Therapy, Orthopedic Prosthetics, Medical Imaging, and Medical Laboratory Techniques.

The Diyarbakır Vocational School of Technical Sciences includes technical departments such as Printing and Publishing, Computer Programming, Electricity, Cartography and Cadastre, Construction, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Furniture and Decoration, Automotive, and Textile. The Diyarbakır Vocational School of Social Sciences offers programs in Culinary Arts, Child Development, Business Administration, Accounting, and Tourism.

The vocational schools located in the districts have been shaped according to regional needs. In Diyarbakır Vocational School of Agriculture and Bismil Vocational School, agricultural programs such as Horticulture, Food Technology, Organic Farming, and Dairy and Livestock Farming are prominent. In schools in Çermik, Ergani, and Silvan, various programs including Banking, Child Development, Computer Programming, and Electricity are offered.

International Activities

Dicle University is a participant in various exchange programs as part of its internationalization strategy. Through the Erasmus+ program, it conducts student and staff mobility with higher education institutions in Europe. Additionally, academic collaborations are maintained with other universities through the Farabi (domestic) and Mevlana (international) exchange programs.

Dicle University has received various awards and rankings in the areas of academic performance, accessibility, and sustainability.

Disability-Free University Awards: Under awards granted by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), the university received the "Accessibility in Education" award in 2018, the "Accessibility in Space" award (Orange Flag) in 2020, and the "Accessibility in Socio-Cultural Activities" award (Blue Flag) in 2020.^【3】

International Rankings: In the Times Higher Education (THE) 2023 Asia University Rankings, Dicle University was placed in the 201-300 band. According to the THE Impact Ranking 2023 (Impact Rankings), it ranked in the 201-300 band globally in the category of "Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure" (SDG9), and 14th among public universities in Türkiye.^【4】

Institutional Achievement Awards: The university administration presents achievement awards to academic and administrative staff to encourage their contributions to scientific work and institutional loyalty. At ceremonies held under this framework, certificates of achievement are awarded to personnel demonstrating exceptional effort.^【5】

Student Life

Dicle University provides various facilities to meet students' academic, social, cultural, and physical needs. On-campus dormitories operated by the Credit and Hostels Institution (KYK) and other private accommodation facilities fulfill students' housing needs. Catering services are provided through the central cafeteria and faculty canteens.

The 5,000-square-meter Central Library on campus offers students extensive access to printed and electronic resources. The congress center and faculty conference halls host scientific and cultural events throughout the year. Sports facilities including full and semi-Olympic swimming pools, indoor sports halls, a stadium, tennis courts, and artificial turf fields are open to students. Additionally, over 80 student clubs operating within the university organize social activities catering to diverse interests. Health services are delivered through university hospitals located on campus.^【6】
