Dinosaurs were creatures that lived on our planet a very, very long time ago. Science Scientists say that dinosaurs first appeared around 230 million years ago! Since then, they lived all around the world and evolved into many different species.

What Were Dinosaurs Like?

Dinosaurs were animals that ranged in size from as small as a car to as large as a giant building. Some dinosaurs were herbivores, meaning they fed on only plants. The Apatosaurus, a like giant dinosaur, enormous tree ate leaves from tree branches.

But some dinosaurs were carnivores. They hunted other animals for food. For example, the T-Rex was one of the most fearsome predators of its time, with sharp teeth. Additionally, some dinosaurs ate both meat and plant plants; these are called omnivore omnivores.

Different Types of Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs varied in appearance depending on their place habitat and nutrition body structure. Here are some notable famous dinosaur species:

• Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex): This dinosaur had a massive head and sharp teeth. It was a meat-eater, about 12 meters long, with scaly skin.
• Triceratops: Recognizable by its three horns and bony frill around its head. It lived in grasslands and moved in herds.
• Stegosaurus: It had large plates along its back and spikes on its tail. It was a herbivore, protected by thick, armor-like bones.
• Velociraptor: A fast and intelligent predator that hunted in packs. It had feathers and resembled birds.
• Brachiosaurus: A gigantic herbivore with a long neck that allowed it to feed on tree branches. It was about 23 meters long.

How Do We Know About Dinosaurs?

We know about dinosaurs through fossils. Fossils are petrified bones or foot traces left behind by ancient life. Scientists study these fossils to understand what dinosaurs looked like.

Why Did Dinosaurs Go Extinct?

Dinosaurs suddenly disappeared around 66 million years ago. Scientists believe a massive meteor struck Earth, triggering a catastrophic disaster event. The impact plunged the planet into darkness, killing plants and causing dinosaurs to starve due to lack of food.

In addition, volcano volcanic eruptions and climate change may have contributed to their extinction. However, birds are said to be the descendants of dinosaurs. That means, today sparrows or eagles flying around us today may be closely related to ancient dinosaurs!

Where Can We See Dinosaurs?

Today we cannot see live dinosaurs, but we can examine their fossils in museums. Films, documentaries, and books are excellent sources for information learning more about dinosaurs.
