He spent his childhood years at home surrounded by music and books, describing this period as “a life in an aquarium.” His mother supported him in many areas, from learning languages to building a library. He began his primary education in 1943 at Kocamustafapaşa 28th Primary School, followed by Davutpaşa Middle School and Pertevniyal High School. After graduating from high school in 1956, he enrolled at the Faculty of Law, Istanbul University. However, his interest was drawn more toward literary activities than his formal courses; he attended classes at the Faculty of Letters, particularly benefiting from [Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar](/en/detay/dogan-hizlan-0f21f/llms.txt)’s theater lectures. His first article was published in 1954 in the magazine *Yankı*, and in the same year he entered the field of criticism with an article on [Fazıl Hüsnü Dağlarca](/en/detay/fazil-husnu-daglarca/llms.txt) in *Forum* magazine. In 1958, he co-founded the magazine *a Dergisi*. In 1963, he began working as a proofreader at *Cumhuriyet* newspaper and remained there until 1968. Later, he prepared the culture and arts pages for *Yeni Gazete* and the *Kelebek* supplement of *Hürriyet*. In 1967, he took over the editorial management of the magazine *Yeni Edebiyat* at Altın Kitaplar. He also played a role in the founding of Hürriyet Yayınları and served as its manager for a period. For many years, he has continued his work as a publishing advisor and columnist for *Hürriyet* newspaper. Hızlan is known not only for his newspaper articles but also for his critical essays published in numerous journals. He has published literary criticism in many magazines including *Yankı, Pazar Postası, Varlık, Türk Dili, Dönem, Yelken, Şiir Sanatı, Papirüs, Soyut* and *Yeni Edebiyat*. He was also active on television and radio; in 1972 he created the program *Kitaplar ve Düşünceler* on TRT Istanbul Radio, and produced *Yaşayan Edebiyatçılar* on TRT and the long-running *Karalama Defteri* on TRT 2, along with various other culture and arts programs on different channels. ### **His Approach to Criticism** The foundation of Doğan Hızlan’s approach to criticism lies in the principle of “choosing to build rather than destroy.” He views criticism not merely as a destructive act but as a creative endeavor that introduces readers to quality literature and fosters a love of reading. Although some describe him as a “subjective critic,” Hızlan has never adhered rigidly to any single theory; instead, he has drawn from various approaches to develop his own criteria. He refers to his writings as “critical essays,” placing analysis at the center and arguing that a literary work must be understood correctly by both author and reader. He values diversity and inclusiveness in critical styles, calling this approach “encircling criticism.” He emphasizes that literature forms a continuous whole and that tradition is an integral part of this unity. He asserts that a critic must possess a worldview, but must purify it of political biases and focus instead on art and culture. ### **Awards, Recognition and Personal Traits** Known as the “living anthology” of Turkish literature, Hızlan has contributed significantly to making many young writers and poets visible in the literary world. Public libraries bearing his name have been opened in Antalya and Istanbul’s Bakırköy district, and a school building, through an initiative by the Ministry of Culture, has been converted into the Doğan Hızlan Library. In 2011, he was awarded the Presidency Culture and Arts Grand Prize, and a book about him was published by Harvard University. In his personal life, his passions are books, music, and writing. He enjoys visiting secondhand bookstores and collects pens. He has a habit of drinking five cups of tea daily and prefers to spend these hours at home. He is known for his perfectionist nature, which he considers both exhausting and the key to his achievements.
