Dokuz Eylül University (DEÜ)

Dokuz Eylül University (DEÜ) is a public university located in İzmir. The institution derives its name from 9 September 1922, the date of İzmir’s liberation from Greek occupation, and conducts educational, teaching, and research activities in accordance with the regulations of the Council of Higher Education.

History

Dokuz Eylül University was established by Decree-Law No. 41 on Higher Education Institutions, which came into effect on 20 July 1982. The university’s academic foundations were laid by integrating units transferred from Aegean University, the Ministry of National Education Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Ankara Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences. At its founding, established units such as the Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Faculty of Medicine, and Buca Faculty of Education were incorporated into the university.

In 1992, the structure of the institution was reorganized following the transfer of certain faculties and schools from DEÜ to newly established universities in the Aegean region: Adnan Menderes University, Muğla University, Celal Bayar University, and Pamukkale University. In subsequent years, the university continued its academic development and on 13 December 2021 was granted the status of “Research University” by the Council of Higher Education. The Institutional Accreditation Certificate issued by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (YÖKAK) in 2022 was renewed with full accreditation until 2027 following its 2024 evaluation. In November 2024, the name of the Tınaztepe Campus was changed to “Dokuz Eylül University Central Campus.” In 2025, the School of Applied Sciences was closed and a Directorate of Research and Development was established.

Campuses

Dokuz Eylül University conducts its educational and research activities across multiple campuses spread throughout different regions of İzmir. The main campus in Buca has been designated as the “Central Campus” since November 2024. The İnciraltı Campus in Balçova hosts the university’s health units, while the rectorate and administrative units are located in Alsancak. In addition, campuses in Hatay, Torbalı, Seferihisar, Foça, and Kiraz host academic units.

Undergraduate Programs

Undergraduate programs are conducted within faculties. The Buca Faculty of Education offers programs in German Language and Literature, Computer and Instructional Technologies, Biology, Geography, Science Education, Physics, French Language and Literature, Primary Mathematics Education, English Language and Literature, Chemistry, Mathematics, Preschool Education, Special Education, Guidance and Psychological Counseling, Classroom Teaching, Social Studies, History, Turkish Language and Literature, and Turkish Language Teaching.

In the fields of Letters and Sciences: The Faculty of Letters includes departments of American Culture and Literature, Archaeology, Linguistics, Philosophy, English Translation and Interpreting, Comparative Literature, Museology, Psychology, Russian Language and Literature, Sociology, History, and Turkish Language and Literature. The Faculty of Science offers programs in Computer Science, Biology, Physics, Statistics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Engineering and Architecture programs: The Faculty of Engineering offers programs in Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Electrical-Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geophysics, Geology, Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, and Textile Engineering. The Faculty of Architecture includes the departments of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning. The Faculty of Maritime Studies provides education in Maritime Transportation Management Engineering, Ship Machinery Operation Engineering, Maritime Business Management, and Logistics Management.

In the fields of Economic and Administrative Sciences and Business: Programs include Labor Economics, Econometrics, Economics, Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, Management Information Systems, International Relations, and International Trade and Business.

In the field of Health: Educational units include the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Nursing, and the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation within the Faculty of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation. Additionally, veterinary medicine education is provided by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Other undergraduate programs include: Law at the Faculty of Law; Theology at the Faculty of Theology; Film Design (Writing/Directing), Photography, and Fiction Sound and Image Management at the Faculty of Fine Arts; Gastronomy and Culinary Arts and Tourism Management at the Faculty of Tourism and the School of Applied Sciences; and Sports Management at the Necat Hepkon Faculty of Sports Sciences.

Associate Degree Programs

Associate degree programs are delivered through vocational schools. The Vocational School of Health Services offers programs in Oral and Dental Health, Anesthesia, Biomedical Equipment Technology, First Aid and Emergency Response, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Audiometry, Radiotherapy, Medical Documentation and Secretarial Studies, Medical Imaging, and Medical Laboratory Technology.

The İzmir Vocational School offers technical and administrative programs including Computer Programming, Biomedical Equipment, Office Management, Casting, Electricity, Electronics, Cartography and Cadastre, Heating and Air Conditioning, Construction, Chemistry, Jewelry, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Accounting, Marketing, Health Institution Management, Agricultural Management, Textile, and Local Administration.

The vocational schools in the districts offer programs tailored to regional needs. Bergama Vocational School provides programs in Alternative Energy and Computer Technology, Occupational Health and Safety. Efes Vocational School offers programs in Food Technology, Civil Aviation (Management/Cabin Services), Tourism and Hotel Management. Torbalı Vocational School includes programs in Natural Building Stones, Industrial Glass and Ceramics, Geotechnics, Welding, Mining, Drilling, Civil Defense and Firefighting. Kiraz Vocational School offers programs in Laboratory and Veterinary Health and Milk and Dairy Products Technology.

International Activities

In line with its internationalization strategy, Dokuz Eylül University is a member of prestigious academic networks such as the European University Association (EUA), the International Association of Universities (IAMU), and the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE). The institution holds the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) and Diploma Supplement labels and is among the pilot universities designated by the Council of Higher Education. It actively participates as a stakeholder in the “Study in İzmir” platform. The university runs dual-degree programs with SUNY-Albany and Maine Maritime Academy in the United States, supports student and staff mobility through the Erasmus+ and Mevlana programs, and maintains global academic integration through more than 400 bilateral collaborations and research and development projects under DEPARK.

Awards and Achievements

Dokuz Eylül University has received numerous awards for academic performance, technological innovation, and social contribution.

• YÖK Accessible University Awards (2024): The university won a total of 17 awards in the competition organized by the Council of Higher Education. With 8 “Accessible Program Badge” awards, DEÜ ranked second in Turkey. It also received a total of 9 flag awards in the categories of Accessibility in Space (Orange Flag), Accessibility in Education (Green Flag), and Accessibility in Socio-Cultural Activities (Blue Flag).

• THE Young University Rankings (2024): In the Times Higher Education (THE) “Young University Rankings,” DEÜ was placed in the 401–500 band globally. This ranking places DEÜ among the top five public universities in Turkey and first in the Aegean Region.

• TEKNOFEST 2025 Championship: The “Roket9 Team,” composed of students from the Faculty of Engineering, became the Turkish champion in the TEKNOFEST 2025 Vertical Landing Rocket Competition, out of 324 competing teams.

• ISIF’25 Medals: At the 2025 International Invention Fair (ISIF’25), DEÜ researchers won a total of six medals. Berke and Batu Manoğlu received the Gold Medal for their “Intraperitoneal Infusion Pump System.” The team of Kadri Turgut Gürsel and Aleyna Yıldız Gültekin (Biosensor project) won the Silver Medal. The teams of Levent Çavaş (Hydrogen production), Gülşah Ekin Kartal (Capsule technology), and Raziye Öztürk Ürek (Biosurfactant production) each received a Bronze Medal.
