# Emrah Sağaz

> Emrah Sağaz (1 January 1989 – 15 July 2016) was a Turkish citizen who was martyred when he was crushed under a tank used by the coup plotters in the Esenler district of Istanbul during the 15 July 2016 coup attempt.

**Emrah Sağaz** (1 January 1989 – 15 July 2016) was a textile worker. During the [15 July 2016 coup attempt](/en/detay/15-temmuz-darbe-girisimi-8febf/llms.txt), he was killed when he was crushed under a tank used by the coup plotters on **Esenler Atışalanı Caddesi** in Istanbul.

### Life

[Emrah Sağaz](/en/detay/emrah-sagaz-850e9/llms.txt) was born on 1 January 1989 in Giresun as the youngest of six children to Asiye and Aydın Sağaz.

He lived in the Esenler district of Istanbul and worked as a laborer in the textile industry. He married Elif Sağaz. The couple lived in Esenler during their approximately one-and-a-half-year marriage. At the time of his death, his wife Elif Sağaz was five months pregnant. The couple were expecting their first child.

Approximately four months after his martyrdom, his wife Elif Sağaz gave birth to a daughter. Following Emrah Sağaz’s wish to name his daughter before his death, the child was named **Hiranur**.

### 15 July 2016 Coup Attempt and Martyrdom

On 15 July 2016, Emrah Sağaz went to the market with his wife. Later that day, they had dinner together at home. In the evening, he learned of the coup attempt through television. He then spoke with his older brother and left home. Before leaving, he reconciled with his pregnant wife.

Sağaz went to **Esenler Atışalanı Caddesi** to join citizens resisting the coup attempt. He stood among the crowd near the tank controlled by coup soldiers. As the tank advanced toward civilians, he was crushed beneath it and martyred. His funeral was held at the martyrs’ cemetery in Çamoluk district of his hometown Giresun.

### Places Named After Him

Emrah Sağaz’s name was given to a primary school in Istanbul’s Esenler district. Additionally, a bus stop and a middle school in Çamoluk district of his hometown Giresun were named after him.
