## Article Content

Enes Koç was born in the district of [Horasan](/en/detay/horasan-ilce-bd610/llms.txt) in Erzurum province, but settled with his family in the Yenibosna neighborhood of Istanbul, where he continued his life. Due to his family’s limited financial means, he worked in various jobs during summer months, such as selling water, starting from his middle school years, to contribute to the household economy.[^1]

### Military Education and Career Progression

Before beginning his national service, Koç expressed a desire to serve in Eastern Anatolia or border regions rather than western provinces. He commenced his military training at the Recruit Battalion in Sivas. After completing basic training, he was assigned to a garrison in Akçakale district of Şanlıurfa, located on the Syrian border, for his master sergeant duties.

While serving in the military, he decided to remain in the Turkish Armed Forces as a specialist non-commissioned officer and applied for the relevant examinations. Although he was initially disqualified during the medical examination due to an eye condition, he underwent corrective eye surgery during his civilian life to overcome this obstacle and successfully completed the specialist non-commissioned officer examination on his second attempt. Following the examination and evaluation processes, he was assigned to the Erzincan Artillery Battalion.[^2]

### Martyrdom Incident and Operational Context

Enes Koç lost his life in 2022 while still serving in Şanlıurfa, approximately one and a half weeks before reporting to his new post as a specialist non-commissioned officer in Erzincan. The incident occurred when a homemade explosive device weighing approximately 300 kilograms, placed beneath the border wall and within drainage channels, detonated. In the same explosion, Lieutenant Murat Alyakut and soldier Ertuğrul also lost their lives.[^3]Following a military funeral, Koç was buried at Edirnekapı Martyrs’ Cemetery, where he was recorded as the youngest serviceman interred there.

### Social Impact and Preservation of His Memory

Following Koç’s death, a bus stop in the Fevzi Çakmak neighborhood of Yenibosna, Istanbul, where he lived, was named in his honor. The Istanbul Provincial Directorate of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Family and Social Services periodically visits his family and organizes commemorative ceremonies.
