Erwin Rudolf Josef Alexander [Schrödinger](/en/detay/erwin-schrodinger-f9746/llms.txt) (12 August 1887 – 4 January 1961) was an Austrian theoretical physicist who made fundamental contributions to the development of [quantum mechanics](/en/detay/quantum-physics-in-minutes-book-c4e49/llms.txt). He is best known for the [Schrödinger Equation](/en/detay/schrodinger-6f953/llms.txt), which describes the behavior of subatomic particles and bears his name. For his contributions to quantum theory, he was awarded the [Nobel Prize in Physics](/en/detay/2025-nobel-prize-in-physics-0837b/llms.txt) in 1933 jointly with Paul Dirac.

Schrödinger was born in Vienna and completed his education at the University of Vienna.
