Fenerbahçe (Men's Basketball Team)

Fenerbahçe Men’s Basketball Team (currently known as Fenerbahçe Beko) is the professional men’s basketball branch of Fenerbahçe Sports Club, a multi-sport club based in Türkiye. The team, active on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, plays its home games at the Ülker Sports and Event Hall in Ataşehir. Fenerbahçe competes in the Türkiye Basketball Super League and the EuroLeague, Europe’s premier club competition.

History

Founding and Early Activities (1913–1950)

Fenerbahçe established its basketball branch in 1913, during the early years when basketball began to gain popularity in Türkiye. The club participated in regional basketball competitions held in Istanbul during the final years of the Ottoman Empire and continued its active involvement in the early years of the Republic.

Successes Before the National League (1950–1966)

As basketball developed into an organized structure, Fenerbahçe competed in tournaments such as the Istanbul League and the Türkiye Basketball Championship. During this period, the club achieved success in national championships and contributed significantly to promoting basketball across the country.

The Türkiye Basketball League Era (1966–2000)

With the establishment of the Türkiye Basketball League (TBL), Fenerbahçe integrated into the new structure and delivered consistent performances over the years. A milestone of this era was the club’s first TBL championship title in the 1990–91 season.

Institutionalization and Investment Period (2000–2010)

In the early 2000s, structural investments in the basketball branch elevated the club’s ambitions both nationally and internationally. In 2006, with the support of the Ülker Group, the team was restructured under the name “Fenerbahçe Ülker.”

European Success and the Modern Era (2010–Present)

The appointment of Serbian coach Željko Obradović in 2013 marked a turning point. Fenerbahçe became the first Turkish team to regularly reach the EuroLeague Final Four and ultimately win the EuroLeague championship. During this period, the team established itself as a permanent force among Europe’s elite clubs.

Fenerbahçe is among the clubs that place the greatest emphasis on youth development. Its youth teams have won numerous national championships at the star, junior, and youth levels and have supplied many players to the national teams.
