The production process consists of labor-intensive stages including flattening copper into sheets, shaping it, embossing patterns with hammers, and surface treatments. The resulting products typically manifest as everyday or aesthetic items such as kitchenware (pans, pots, cezve), decorative objects, and souvenirs.

This traditional craft holds a significant place in Gaziantep’s local economy and cultural heritage as a production system that combines functional and cultural dimensions. The labor-based production model distinguishes itself from mechanized mass production by emphasizing high levels of artisanal intervention. Gaziantep Copper Handicraft was officially registered under a geographical indication by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office on 19 July 2010, thereby receiving geographical indication protection. This registration certifies that the product is manufactured in a specific geographical region and that its quality or reputation is intrinsically linked to that region.

Product Definition and Distinctive Features

The most distinctive feature of Gaziantep Copper Handicraft is that its products are manufactured as single-piece units. This production method avoids joining techniques such as soldering, welding, or fastening; instead, items are formed entirely through physical shaping of a single copper sheet. Shaping is carried out using hand tools such as hammers and stakes, while surface treatments are applied using traditional techniques. The single-piece production method is technically preferred as it ensures both the integrity and durability of the product.

In terms of decoration, Gaziantep copper craftsmanship is notable for its rich motif repertoire. Geometric patterns, plant elements, animal figures, and nature themes—inspired by Seljuk and Ottoman aesthetic traditions—are widely used. These motifs are hand-engraved directly onto the copper surface using a technique known as “kalem işi.” Each motif exhibits subtle variations depending on the artisan’s individual skill, ensuring that every product is unique and original. • During rolling, copper hardens; therefore, it is reheated in annealing furnaces to restore its malleability.
• The softened sheets are cut to desired dimensions and prepared for shaping.

2. Shaping

• Cut sheets are shaped on anvils using mallets.
• This process can employ approximately 500 different techniques, varying according to the product type.
• The shaping process ensures the final form remains a single, seamless piece.

3. Motif Engraving

• Traditional motifs are hand-engraved onto the shaped products using the kalem technique.
• Geometric, botanical, and animalistic designs predominate in these engravings.
• This stage enhances the artistic and cultural value of the product.

4. Surface Finishing

• In the final stage, products are polished to achieve aesthetic completion.
• Some items may also undergo tin-plating, depending on their intended use.

The oversight process is coordinated by the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, with participation from relevant public institutions and professional associations. Inspection criteria include the type of materials used, craftsmanship quality, originality of motifs, and adherence to traditional production techniques. This monitoring serves not only to ensure quality control but also to preserve the continuity of cultural heritage. Inspections are conducted at regular intervals to prevent non-compliant production and uphold the registered standards.
