### **Early Life and Football Beginnings**

[Gökhan Gönül](/en/detay/gokhan-gonul-0d8ae/llms.txt) was born in 1985 in the Bafra district of Samsun. At the age of six, he moved to Bursa with his family. His talent was noticed while playing football in the neighborhood, leading to his recruitment into the Bursa Yolspor youth system. He began his football career as a goalkeeper; however, during a training session where he was tested in an advanced position, his role changed. At a young age, he played in various positions and gained experience in different aspects of the game. By the age of 13, he was already wearing the senior team jersey. Despite his family’s opposition due to his prioritization of football over his education, he continued playing secretly.

### **Gençlerbirliği and OFTAŞ Era**

In 2002, Gönül transferred to Gençlerbirliği. During his early years at the club, he primarily played for Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ. His performances during this period attracted significant attention. With OFTAŞ, he won three league titles over four seasons and helped the team gain promotion to the Süper Lig. He was awarded the “Most Valuable Player” in Lig A. He played in multiple positions including libero, midfielder, forward, and right-back. His performances eventually placed him on Galatasaray’s transfer radar; however, he chose to join [Fenerbahçe](/en/detay/fenerbahce-besiktas-derbisi-23-aralik-2025-47edf/llms.txt) instead.

- European Cups: 54 matches
- TFF Süper Kupa: 2 matches

With Fenerbahçe, he won the Süper Lig title in the 2010–2011 and 2013–2014 seasons. He also won the [Türkiye](/en/detay/trabzonspor-f7520/llms.txt) Kupası in the 2011–2012 and 2012–2013 seasons, and the Süper Kupa in 2009 and 2014. He played in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League during the 2007–2008 season and in the semifinals of the UEFA Europa League during the 2012–2013 season.

In 2016, after his contract was not renewed, Gönül left Fenerbahçe. However, negotiations did not result in an agreement. Public reports suggested that discussions focused primarily on financial matters and were influenced by his agent and family circle.

### **Beşiktaş and Çaykur Rizespor Career**

After leaving Fenerbahçe, Gönül transferred to Beşiktaş, where he won one Süper Lig title. He later played for Çaykur Rizespor. He became one of the players with the most appearances in Süper Lig history.

### **National Team Career**

Gökhan Gönül earned 66 caps for the Türkiye national team. He was part of the Türkiye squad at the 2016 UEFA European Championship finals. At youth levels, he played only one match for the U23 team. His absence from the national team for extended periods remained a subject of public debate.

### **Coaching Career**

After retiring from professional football, Gönül was appointed assistant coach of the Türkiye U21 national team in 2024. In September of the same year, he was promoted to head coach. The Türkiye Football Federation stated that his playing experience and deep understanding of the player group were decisive factors in this appointment. Gönül stated that his goal in this role was to contribute to the development of players transitioning to the senior national team.

### **Playing Style and Technical Attributes**

Throughout his football career, Gönül stood out for his versatility, particularly as a right-back where his attacking contributions, speed, and stamina drew attention. In his youth, he also played as a forward and midfielder, and was known for his long throw-ins, effectiveness in one-on-one duels, and overlapping runs. He was described by Metin Diyadin as an “aggressive, fast, durable player who can easily dispossess opponents.”

### **Personal Life**

The eldest of three brothers, Gönül’s father is a barber and his mother is a homemaker. He married at a young age and adopted a simple, low-profile lifestyle away from the public eye. He did not choose to live in Istanbul and made watching films a daily routine. He is particularly known for his interest in television series and cinema films.
