Maalouf has been nominated twice consecutively for the Grammy Award and is actively engaged in academic activities in the field of music education.[^1]

### **Childhood and Youth**

**Ibrahim Maalouf** was born in 1980 in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, into a family deeply involved in art and literature. The artist, nephew of writer [Amin Maalouf](/en/detay/amin-maalouf-4f1f6/llms.txt), had an early life shaped by his family’s cultural environment. This familial and cultural background became a defining element in the thematic foundation of his later studio albums.

### **Education**

Having received a classical Western music education, Maalouf developed his technical mastery of the instrument through this training. His academic classical education, combined with awards won in international classical trumpet competitions, laid the foundation for his later methodological synthesis of traditional Middle Eastern motifs with Western forms in jazz music.

### **Career and Works**

Throughout his career, Maalouf has released a total of 19 studio and live albums. His discography, beginning with *Diasporas* (2007), follows a chronological sequence marked by significant releases such as *Diagnostic* (2011), *Wind* (2012), and *Red & Black Light* (2015), in which he reinterpreted a work by Beyoncé to highlight women’s evolving roles in society. He continues his recent activities as part of the tour for the album *Trumpets of Michel-Ange*.

The artist has collaborated on joint projects with major figures such as Quincy Jones, Wynton Marsalis, Elvis Costello and Marcel Khalife. He performed on stage with Sting at the reopening of the Bataclan following the Paris terrorist attacks and delivered an original interpretation of the French national anthem at the Grand Concert de Paris on 14 July 2021. In cinema, Maalouf has composed original scores for the films *The Cow*, *9 Jours à Raqqa*, *Leave No Traces*, and the Molière Award-winning play *Monsieur X*.

### **Contributions, Influence and Awards**

In 2010, he won the French Jazz Music Award for “Best Instrumental Discovery” and the French Music Award for “Best World Music Artist.” One of the first musicians to be nominated twice consecutively for the Grammy Awards and to serve as a member of the main jury at the Cannes Film Festival, Maalouf has demonstrated his global prestige through concrete achievements.[^2]

### **Pedagogical Activities**

Since 1999, Maalouf has maintained continuous activity in music education and pedagogy, teaching at conservatories and founding the first classical music improvisation class in Paris. In 2022, he launched the Free Spirit Ensemble, the world’s first classical orchestra entirely dedicated to improvisation. He also supports the association “Orchestre à l’École” (Orchestra at School), continuing his direct contribution to the academic and artistic development of young talent.
