Her father, Peter, was an engineer and her mother worked as a laboratory technician at a school. She spent a childhood immersed in books with her younger sister, Di. At the age of six, she wrote a story titled *Rabbit*, showing early interest in writing. At eleven, she completed her first novel. She studied French and Literature at the University of Exeter, spending a year in Paris during her studies. After graduation, she moved to London and worked as a researcher for International Amnesty. In 1992, while teaching English in Portugal, she married Jorge Arantes; their daughter Jessica was born in 1993. The marriage ended the same year. In 2001, she married Dr. Neil Murray, with whom she has two children: David (born 2003) and Mackenzie (born 2005). She lives with her family in Edinburgh.
