KAI KF-21 Boramae

KAI KF-21 Boramae is a twin-engine, multirole combat aircraft classified as a 4.5 generation fighter, jointly developed by South Korea and Indonesia. “Boramae” means “falcon” in Korean, and this name symbolizes the aircraft’s agility and predatory capabilities. Designed for the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) and the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU), the KF-21 is capable of performing both air-to-air combat and air-to-ground strike missions with high effectiveness. The KF-21 project represents South Korea’s second indigenous fighter aircraft program, following the FA-50 Golden Eagle, a light attack and trainer aircraft. This initiative aims to enhance technological independence in South Korea’s defense industry, demonstrate advanced fighter development capabilities, and modernize its air forces.

The KF-21 project emerged from the need for a technologically superior platform to replace South Korea’s aging fleet of F-4 Phantom II and F-5 Freedom Fighter aircraft, which had been in service for decades but no longer fully meet the demands of modern combat environments. The prime contractor for the project is Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), South Korea’s leading aerospace and defense company. Indonesia joined as a key partner to share development costs and secure technology transfer. The project is also known as the Korean Fighter eXperimental (KF-X).

The development of the KF-21 is planned in two main phases:

• Block 1: This initial phase focuses on a baseline configuration optimized for air superiority missions. Aircraft in the Block 1 configuration are equipped with air-to-air missile systems and advanced radar capabilities. During this phase, the aircraft’s fundamental flight performance, avionics systems, and basic weapons integration have been tested and matured.
• Block 2: The second phase aims to significantly enhance the aircraft’s multirole capabilities. KF-21s in the Block 2 configuration will gain the ability to carry air-to-ground guided munitions, cruise missiles, and other precision strike systems. This phase includes the integration of systems that enable effective operation in both air-to-air and air-to-ground roles.

Future development phases may include the integration of internal weapons bays to reduce the aircraft’s radar cross-section (RCS) and improve stealth characteristics.

South Korea aims to receive at least 40 KF-21 Block 1 aircraft by 2028 as part of its air force modernization program, and to increase this number to a total of 120 by 2032. With Indonesia’s participation as a partner, it is expected that Indonesia will also procure a specified number of KF-21 aircraft.

Under the KF-21 project, various variants are planned to meet different operational requirements. The primary variants currently known are:

• KF-21 Block 1: A single-seat baseline model primarily focused on air superiority missions.
• KF-21 Block 2: A dual-seat variant with enhanced air-to-ground strike capabilities. This model will carry a broader weapons payload and feature a crew configuration suited for managing complex missions.
• KF-21 Naval Variant: Development of a naval variant capable of operating from aircraft carriers is also among the future possibilities.
