**Kudsi Erguner** (born 4 February 1952, Diyarbakır) is a Turkish ney player musicologist writer and academic who performs on the ney a traditional Turkish Sufi musical instrument. Born into a family with generations of ney performers Erguner has dedicated his work to preserving the Mevlevi musical heritage on a global scale through scientific study and its representation on international platforms at both academic and artistic levels.

### **Childhood and Youth**

Kudsi Erguner was born in Diyarbakır in 1952 and belongs to a distinguished musical family that played key roles in transmitting traditional music from the Ottoman era to the Republic. His early life was shaped within a family environment deeply immersed in Sufi culture and classical music training. He began his first musical and ney lessons at a young age under the guidance of his father [Ulvi Erguner](/en/detay/erguner-ulvi/llms.txt) who was the Director of [Turk Musikisi](/en/detay/turk-muzigi-2/llms.txt) at Istanbul Radio and the chief ney player of his time. Through this he became part of the circle of the last great masters of the Mevlevi tradition.

### **Educational Background**

After completing primary and secondary education Erguner moved to Paris to pursue higher education in architecture and musicology. There he completed his architectural studies and earned a doctorate in musicology. His academic training synthesized the East’s master-apprentice [meşk system](/en/detay/mesk-2/llms.txt) with the West’s methodological and analytical approaches to musicology; this synthesis formed the foundation of his later roles as an educator and researcher.

### **Career and Work**

Erguner began his international career in Paris in the 1970s and in 1975 introduced traditional Turkish music to Europe through radio productions and concerts. In addition to classical Turkish music he engaged in dialogue with the musical languages of other cultures and collaborated on joint projects with internationally renowned artists and choreographers such as Peter Gabriel Jean-Michel Jarre and Maurice Béjart.

To preserve the traditional heritage within an academic framework Erguner founded the **Mevlana Institute** (Institut Mevlana) in Paris where he taught ney and Sufi music to numerous international students. He has held professorships at various European music academies including the Rotterdam Conservatory establishing a pedagogical system that has nurtured generations of young ney players. He has published books in both Turkish and French focusing on album projects as well as Sufi culture ney methodology and music history.
