The natural structure of Kumbağ Beach has been shaped by the geomorphological features of this coastal area bordering the Sea of Marmara. The beach was formed by the accumulation of dunes resulting from the erosion and dissolution of sandstones. The coastal strip between Kumbağ and Gaziköy exhibits a high coastal formation due to the perpendicular orientation of the Ganos Mountains toward the sea, while the sandy beaches stretching along the coast serve as recreational areas.
Among the Blue Flag Beaches
According to the Tekirdağ Provincial Environmental Status Report, the Kumbağ Beach area is one of the designated swimming zones contributing to the region's environmental sustainability, and the quality of its seawater is regularly monitored. As of 2015, it has been recognized among the Blue Flag beaches in Tekirdağ, certified for its adherence to international environmental and health standards.
Connection with Recreation and Rural Tourism
The presence of forest-side recreational facilities around the beach supports the development of rural tourism alongside coastal tourism. The region is not only a summer destination but also a space for alternative tourism activities based on rural development. The transitional zone between the forest areas on the Kumbağ hills and the coastal strip allows for activities such as hiking, camping, and the promotion of local products.
Cultural and Historical Environment
The area surrounding Kumbağ Beach bears traces of the former Greek fishing village of Kumbos. The socio-cultural diversity of the region has increased with the migration of populations from the Balkans, which is also reflected in its touristic character. Nearby the beach, there is a historical winery dating back to the Greek period that draws interest from visitors.
Marine Economy and Fisheries
Coastal fishing activities continue along the shores of Kumbağ. The fishermen's shelter and the local fisheries cooperative contribute particularly to the sustainability of small-scale fishing. In this region, species such as bluefish, horse mackerel, bonito, and whiting are caught. Fishing is not only a source of livelihood but also part of the region’s tourism-related economic activities.
