[Martin Charles Scorsese](/en/detay/martin-scorsese-2/llms.txt), born on November 17, 1942, in the Queens borough of New York, is an American film director, producer, screenwriter and one of the most influential figures in cinema history. He is particularly known for his films that explore themes of crime, drama and psychology. Since the late 1960s, Scorsese has built a significant career in Hollywood.

### **Early Life and Education**

Scorsese’s interest in cinema began in childhood and he grew up as a cinephile, continuing his passion through academic study and becoming one of the school-trained filmmakers. In his youth, Scorsese considered becoming a priest but abandoned this dream as his passion for cinema grew stronger. Due to asthma during childhood, he avoided athletic activities and instead turned to theater and cinema. He graduated from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. After completing his undergraduate studies in 1964, he earned a master’s degree in cinema and film in 1966 and began his career with short films made during these years. While at university, he was deeply influenced by his professor Haig P. Manoogian; after Manoogian’s death in 1980, Scorsese dedicated his film Raging Bull to him.

His first major collaboration with Robert De Niro, with whom he would work for many years, came in the 1973 film Mean Streets. In the 1974 film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, he portrayed the struggle of a divorced woman to rebuild her life. Ellen Burstyn, in the lead role, won the Academy Award for Best Actress. In 1980, again with De Niro, he portrayed the life of boxer Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull.

After the box office failure of his 1977 film New York, New York, Scorsese became addicted to drugs. With the help of his close friend and frequent leading actor Robert De Niro, he overcame his addiction. The 1980 project Raging Bull played a major role in his recovery and return to directing. His films The King of Comedy, After Hours and The Color of Money drew attention during the 1980s. He also directed the music video for Bad, a hit song by pop icon Michael Jackson in 1987.
