He began his career in the Manchester United academy, where he played professionally and earned one cap for the England national team. He later played for Getafe CF (on loan) and Olympique de Marseille. Known for his ability to play both as a centre-forward and a winger, Greenwood is recognized for his proficiency with both feet. ### Early Life [Mason Greenwood](/en/detay/mason-greenwood-a0768/llms.txt) was born on 1 October 2001 in the city of Bradford, in the West Yorkshire region of England. He began playing football at a development centre in Halifax, where he trained with Manchester United’s youth system. His prolific goal-scoring in a match at the age of six attracted the attention of Manchester United scouts. Greenwood was soon integrated into the club’s youth academy. ### Youth Career During his time in Manchester United’s academy, Greenwood stood out for his technical ability, particularly his skill in using both feet with equal effectiveness. This ability was evident not only in his shooting but also in set pieces, free kicks and penalties. His rapid development often saw him playing for teams above his age group. On 22 July 2017, he played for the Manchester United U18 team against Northern Ireland U18 at Showgrounds Stadium. In May 2018, he was part of the Manchester United youth squad at the ICGT Tournament in the Netherlands, where he scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the final. Despite being the youngest player in the tournament, he was named Player of the Tournament. At the start of the 2018-19 season, he signed his first professional contract with Manchester United. ### Professional Career at Manchester United Greenwood made his official debut for Manchester United on 6 March 2019 in a UEFA Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain, which United won 3-1. At 17 years and 156 days old, he became the youngest player in the club’s history to appear in the Champions League. His first Premier League appearance came shortly after, as a substitute against Arsenal. He scored his first goal for the club on 19 September 2019 in a UEFA Europa League match against Kazakhstan’s Astana. During the 2019-20 season, Greenwood became a regular starter and scored five goals in 13 matches following the league’s restart after the pandemic pause. In the 2020-21 season, he made 52 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United, scoring 12 goals and providing six assists, seven of which came in the Premier League. He began the 2021-22 season strongly, contributing six goals and two assists in 24 appearances. His final official match for Manchester United was on 19 January 2022, away against Brentford. In total, Greenwood made 129 official appearances for Manchester United, scoring 35 goals. ### National Team Career Greenwood represented England at the U15, U17, U18 and U21 levels. He made his sole appearance for the senior England national team on 5 September 2020, coming on as a substitute for Harry Kane in the 78th minute of a 1-0 UEFA Nations League away win against Iceland. Two days later, he and Phil Foden were removed from the squad and sent back to England after allegations of breaching coronavirus quarantine rules. He has not been called up to the England national team since that date. ### Legal Proceedings On 30 January 2022, Mason Greenwood was taken into custody by Greater Manchester Police.[^1] On the same day, Manchester United announced that the player would not train with the club or play in matches.[^2] On 1 February 2022, Greenwood was arrested again on suspicion of sexual assault and threatening to kill; according to police, additional time was requested to question him and this request was approved by magistrates.[^3] On 2 February 2022, Greenwood was released on bail while the investigation continued.[^4] On 15 October 2022, Greenwood was arrested again for allegedly breaching his bail conditions.[^5] On the same day, Janet Potter, North West Regional Director of the Crown Prosecution Service, stated that Greater Manchester Police had formally charged Greenwood with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and actual bodily harm.[^6] According to the charges, the alleged attempted rape occurred on 22 October 2021, the alleged actual bodily harm took place in December 2021, and the alleged controlling and coercive behaviour spanned a period beginning in November 2018.[^7] On 17 October 2022, Greenwood appeared before a magistrate at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court, where he only confirmed his name, date of birth and address. District Judge Mark Hadfield ruled that Greenwood should be held in custody pending trial and referred the case to Manchester Crown Court, setting the next hearing date for 21 November 2022.[^8] On 19 October 2022, Judge John Potter at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court ordered Greenwood’s release on bail with conditions prohibiting contact with witnesses, including the alleged victim, and requiring him to reside at his address in Bowdon.[^9] On 21 November 2022, at Manchester Crown Court (Minshull Street), it was announced that the next hearing would be held on 10 February 2023.[^10] In February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service announced it had discontinued the prosecution against Greenwood. A spokesperson for the agency stated that ongoing review obligations required the case to be reassessed, and that with key witnesses retracting their statements and new evidence emerging, a realistic prospect of conviction no longer existed.[^11] Accordingly, the charges of attempted rape, actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour against Greenwood were formally dropped on 2 February 2023.[^12] ### Departure from Manchester United Following the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision to drop the charges, Manchester United launched its own internal investigation. As a result of the investigation led by Executive Chairman Richard Arnold, Manchester United announced on 21 August 2023 that Greenwood would leave the club. According to the club’s statement, Arnold concluded that the evidence did not support the allegations against Greenwood, but that it was mutually agreed that his career should continue elsewhere. The club also stated that Greenwood had been suspended from the club for 18 months. In a written statement, Greenwood acknowledged he had made mistakes and accepted responsibility.[^13] The club announced it was considering options including contract termination, sale or loan of the player. ### Getafe CF (Loan) At the end of the 2023-24 transfer window, Manchester United loaned Mason Greenwood to Spanish La Liga club Getafe CF. Greenwood made his debut for Getafe on 17 September 2023, coming on as a substitute in the 80th minute of a 3-2 La Liga win against Osasuna. In his two seasons with Marseille, Greenwood made 81 appearances across all competitions, scoring 48 goals and providing 17 assists. In the 2024-25 season, he shared the Ligue 1 top scorer title with Ousmane Dembélé, who later won the Ballon d’Or. He maintained his scoring form in the 2025-26 season, scoring a hat-trick on 13 January 2026 in a 9-0 win against Bayeux. ### Developments Regarding National Team Status Following his performances at Marseille, developments emerged regarding Greenwood’s national team eligibility. Mark Bullingham, Chairman of the English Football Association (FA), confirmed that Greenwood had requested to switch his international allegiance to the Jamaica national team. It was reported that Greenwood holds a Jamaican passport through his maternal grandparents. England national team head coach Thomas Tuchel stated in September 2025 that he had not spoken with Greenwood or his representatives and that the player was not part of England’s future plans. In July 2026, reports emerged that Turkish Süper Lig club Fenerbahçe were in talks to sign Greenwood; it was noted that if completed, the transfer would be the most expensive in Fenerbahçe’s history.
