**Mevlana İdris Zengin** (15 March 1966, Andırın, Kahramanmaraş – 7 June 2022, Kahramanmaraş) was a Turkish poet and writer. He produced works in poetry, short story, fairy tale, essay and children’s literature; his first writing was published in 1979, his works have been translated into various languages, and some of his texts have served as subjects for animated films and documentaries.

### **Life**

Mevlana İdris Zengin was born on 15 March 1966 in the Andırın district of Kahramanmaraş. He completed his secondary education at Kahramanmaraş Imam Hatip High School. He continued his higher education at the Faculty of Law of Istanbul University and graduated in 1989.

In 1994 he began working as a press advisor at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. He continued his literary activities in the fields of poetry, short story, fairy tale, essay and children’s literature.

Zengin died on 7 June 2022 at the age of 56 in the hospital in Kahramanmaraş where he was receiving treatment. His funeral prayer was held at Eyüp Sultan Camii and he was buried in the Mihrişah Valide Sultan Haziresi.

### **Educational Life**

Zengin’s education developed primarily in Kahramanmaraş and Istanbul. After graduating from Kahramanmaraş Imam Hatip High School, he studied at the Faculty of Law of Istanbul University. He completed his legal education in 1989.

### **Beginning of Literary Career**

Mevlana İdris Zengin’s first published writing appeared in 1979 in the newspaper **Yeni Devir**. In subsequent years his poems, stories and essays were published in journals and newspapers such as **İkindiyazıları**, **Diriliş**, **Dergâh**, **Albatros**, **Gül Çocuk**, **Mavi Kuş**, **Kaşgar**, **Geniş Zamanlar** and **Gerçek Hayat**.

### **Literary Identity and Areas of Writing**

Zengin produced works in the genres of poetry, short story, fairy tale, essay and children’s literature. He became known for his contributions to children’s literature. In his fantastic fairy tales, unusual characters, imagery drawn from the child’s world and the portrayal of reality through a child’s perspective were prominent features.

In his works, the ideas of reaching children and learning from them were framed within contrasts such as good-evil, beautiful-ugly and valuable-valueless. His poems explored themes of longing, address, melancholy and surrender. Humor was used in his texts in relation to selected individuals and situations drawn from everyday life.

In his fairy tales and poems written for children, he sought to move beyond conventional narrative structures and construct plots aligned with children’s perception and logic. This orientation formed the foundation for the unusual characters and fantastical elements in his works.

### **Works in Children’s Literature**

Mevlana İdris Zengin’s works in children’s literature focused on fairy tales, stories and poetry. His story **Mavi Masallar** and **Sufi ile Pufi** were adapted into animated films and broadcast on TRT.

In 2018 he introduced the journal **ÇETO-Çocuk Edebiyatı Tercüme Ofisi**, developed under the slogan “Aklın Varsa Büyüme”.

In his children’s literature texts, fantastical narrative, humor, the child’s perspective, transformation of everyday life and unusual characters were combined.

### **Documentary and Visual Production Work**

Mevlana İdris Zengin wrote the text for and served as concept advisor for the documentary **Asla ve Daima Nuri Pakdil**, produced by TRT and released in 2010. He contributed to the poetic documentary **Gül Sesleri**, based on the poems of Sezai Karakoç. This production was screened at the **International Sezai Karakoç Symposium** held in Diyarbakır in 2012.

### **Translations and Publications Abroad**

Zengin’s works have been translated into various languages. Ten books from his **Tuhaf Adamlar** series were translated into German, English, French, Italian, Arabic, Russian, Spanish, Persian and Polish.

His poetry collection **İyi Geceler Bayım** was translated into Persian and published in Iran in 2006, while **Dondurmalı Matematik** was translated into Arabic and published in various Arab countries.

### **Awards**

Mevlana İdris Zengin received the Gökyüzü Yayınları Children’s Literature Award in 1987 for his poetry book **Kuş Renkli Çocukluğum**. His work **Korku Dükkânı** was recognized by the Turkish Writers’ Union Children’s Literature Award in 1998. In 2008 he received an international award at an event in Prizren in the category of those who contributed to Turkish language.

### **Scholarly Works on Him**

Academic studies on Mevlana İdris Zengin have been conducted at universities in Cairo, Berlin and Istanbul. Scholarly research has been produced on the educational messages in his stories and fairy tales, his approach to children’s literature and his **Tuhaf Adamlar** series.

### **Death and Burial**
