Origin

The word microphone, of French origin, has entered our language with two primary meanings: the first, now rarely used, is the definition of "a device for amplifying faint sounds"; the second is its current technical meaning, "a device that converts sound vibrations into electrical signals". The word's origin is based on the English term microphone, which serves the same functions.
