[^1]The second child in a family of five, Çalık completed his primary and secondary education in Gümüşhane. He began his political and social activities at an early age; in 1972 he served on the Supervisory Board of the Gümüşhane Branch of the Turkish Nationalists Organization, was appointed in 1975 as President of the Elmadağ Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Youth Branch, and was elected in 1977 as a member of the General Central Board of Ülkü Ocakları. [^3]Shortly after graduation, he began doctoral studies at Boğaziçi University but abandoned them after four months. Between 1985 and 1987, he earned a master’s degree in international politics at the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in the United States. [^4]He completed his doctoral education in 1991 at the Institute of Social Sciences of Ankara University, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Ergun Özbudun, with a thesis titled “Sources and Development of the MHP Movement from the Perspective of Certain Components of Political Culture and Relations.” [^5] ### Public Service and Academic Career Mustafa Çalık began his professional career in 1980 as an assistant expert at the State Planning Organization (DPT), and was promoted to planning expert in 1984. He resigned from his position at the DPT in 1986. [^6]Alongside his public service, Çalık continued his academic activities, teaching courses on Atatürk’s Principles and the History of the Turkish Revolution at Ankara University and Hacettepe University between 1983 and 1984. [^7]In later stages of his career, he served as a Doctoral Lecturer at the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences at Gümüşhane University. [^9]In April 1989, he began publishing the magazine Türkiye Günlüğü and remained its General Editor until his death. In addition to his editorial work, he served as editor-in-chief at Cedit Neşriyat and wrote columns for various newspapers including Yeni Ufuk, Kurultay, Ayyıldız, and Bugün. [^10]He occasionally used the pseudonym “Fazıl Mustafa” in his writings. ### Political Career Active in politics, Çalık served as an advisor to Turgut Özal, the eighth President of the Republic of Türkiye. [^11]In his political party activities, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Great Unity Party (BBP) during the leadership of [Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu](/en/detay/muhsin-yazicioglu-750503/llms.txt) and was a candidate for Member of Parliament from Gümüşhane under the MHP banner in the general elections of 18 April 1999, though he was not elected. [^15]His body was brought to his hometown of Gümüşhane and buried on Friday, 8 December 2023, in the family cemetery of Çalık village, following a funeral prayer held at Kemaliye Camii. The funeral ceremony was attended by prominent state officials, political party leaders, academics, and a large public gathering. Among those present were Mustafa Şentop, Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye; Vedat Bilgin, then Chairman of the TBMM Health, Family, Labor and Social Affairs Committee; Mustafa Destici, General Chairman of the Great Unity Party (BBP); Gültekin Uysal, General Chairman of the Democratic Party; Alper Tanrısever, Governor of Gümüşhane; Aziz Yıldırım, Governor of Trabzon; Mustafa Eldivan, Governor of Bayburt; Mehmet Fatih Serdengeçti, Governor of Giresun; former ministers including Fikri Işık; Ercan Çimen, Mayor of Gümüşhane; Atilla Ataman, Acting Mayor of Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality; Hükmü Pekmezci, Mayor of Bayburt; and Professor Dr. Mehmet Naci Bostancı, Rector of Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University.
