### Education and Military Career

Ömer Halisdemir continued his education during childhood and youth in Niğde. Due to his family’s financial circumstances, he worked during his time outside school to contribute to the family’s livelihood. After completing his education, he chose a military career.

Halisdemir joined the Turkish Armed Forces in 1999 as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the infantry.[^2] Throughout his career, he served in various domestic and international assignments.[^3] During one of his overseas postings, he served in Afghanistan, where he was stationed in the same operational environment as Semih Terzi, whom he would later confront on the night of 15 July.[^4]

In the later stages of his military career, he was assigned to the Special Forces Command. Promoted to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, Halisdemir served as the bodyguard Non-Commissioned Officer to Special Forces Commander Zekai Aksakallı.[^5] The professional relationship between Aksakallı and Halisdemir lasted approximately twenty years.[^6]

By 2016, Halisdemir was serving at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Gölbaşı, Ankara. Due to its personnel, organizational structure and operational capacity, the headquarters was one of the military centers targeted by FETÖ-affiliated coup plotters on 15 July.[^7]

### The 15 July 2016 Coup Attempt

#### Targeting the Special Forces Command

On the night of 15 July 2016, FETÖ-affiliated coup plotters within the Turkish Armed Forces launched an operation to overthrow the constitutional order of the Republic of Türkiye and seize state control. Public institutions, military command centers, and strategic units were targeted for takeover.

The Special Forces Command headquarters in Gölbaşı, Ankara, was among the military centers targeted by FETÖ-affiliated coup plotters. The group attempting to seize control was led by Brigadier General Semih Terzi, who at the time was Deputy Commander of the Special Forces Command.[^8]

The aircraft carrying Semih Terzi and his accompanying FETÖ-affiliated soldiers landed at Etimesgut Air Base at 01:13 on the night of 15 July transitioning into 16 July, after departing from Diyarbakır.[^9] From there, the coup-supporting soldiers moved toward the Special Forces Command headquarters in Gölbaşı by helicopter.

Before reaching the headquarters, Terzi ordered that the perimeter be secured, that commanders not be allowed entry, and that force be used if necessary.[^10] This directive aimed to dismantle the existing command structure within the headquarters and bring the Special Forces Command under the control of the coup attempt.

#### Zekai Aksakallı’s Order

Upon learning of the coup attempt and Semih Terzi’s advance toward the Special Forces Command, Zekai Aksakallı began contacting trusted personnel within the headquarters. He ordered them to take up arms and establish defensive positions around the command center.[^11]

Aksakallı telephoned his bodyguard, Ömer Halisdemir. He informed Halisdemir that he was assigning him a historic mission on behalf of the homeland and the nation: to neutralize Brigadier General Semih Terzi before he entered the headquarters. He explicitly stated that this mission would lead to martyrdom.[^12]

Aksakallı’s order to Halisdemir was conveyed as follows:

> “Brigadier General Semih Terzi is a traitor to the homeland and a rebel. Kill him before he enters the headquarters. There is martyrdom at the end. Forgive his blood.”[^13]

Ömer Halisdemir accepted the order with the words: “Yes, Commander, may my blood be forgiven. Forgive me as well.”[^14] After the phone call, he checked his weapon and waited near the headquarters for Terzi and the accompanying FETÖ-affiliated soldiers to arrive.

#### Neutralization of Semih Terzi

On 16 July 2016 at approximately 02:16, Brigadier General Semih Terzi and his accompanying coup-supporting soldiers arrived at the Special Forces Command headquarters by helicopter.[^15]

Ömer Halisdemir waited near a wooded area close to the entrance of the headquarters building. As the FETÖ-affiliated soldiers disembarked from the helicopter and advanced toward the building, Halisdemir blended into their ranks. He approached Semih Terzi, who was leading the group, and called out, “Commander.” As Terzi turned around, Halisdemir fired three shots from his pistol, neutralizing him.[^16]

As the severely wounded Terzi collapsed to the ground, Halisdemir moved toward the wooded area beside the headquarters building. The FETÖ-affiliated soldiers accompanying Terzi opened fire on Halisdemir from behind.[^17]

#### Martyrdom

Severely wounded by the gunfire from the FETÖ-affiliated soldiers, Ömer Halisdemir was carried from the wooded area to the front of the headquarters building. The ambulance that arrived at the scene was not permitted to provide medical assistance and was sent away.[^18] After it became clear that Halisdemir was still alive, the soldiers opened fire on him again while he lay on the ground, killing him.[^19]

The number of bullets fired at Halisdemir varies across sources. Some reports state 17 bullets, others 30. Detailed accounts indicate that 15 shots were fired initially, and after Halisdemir was observed to still be alive, he was shot again.[^20]

The FETÖ-affiliated soldiers transported the incapacitated Semih Terzi into the headquarters building. Terzi was later intended to be flown by helicopter to a hospital, but he died during transit.[^21] Thus, Semih Terzi never assumed control of the Special Forces Command.

### Impact of His Intervention on the Coup Attempt

Brigadier General Semih Terzi’s objective was to seize control of the Special Forces Command and use its personnel, weapons, and operational capabilities to advance the coup. [Ömer Halisdemir’s](/en/detay/omer-halisdemir-d0b17/llms.txt) intervention prevented Terzi from entering the headquarters and taking command.[^22]

After Halisdemir neutralized Terzi, the FETÖ-affiliated soldiers’ plan to take control of the Special Forces Command failed. Halisdemir’s execution of the order given to him—fully aware it would lead to martyrdom—became one of the defining symbols of military resistance against the 15 July coup attempt.[^23]

This intervention also thwarted the FETÖ-affiliated plotters’ ability to use the Special Forces Command as a base for further military operations. For this reason, Ömer Halisdemir’s name became one of those associated with pivotal moments that altered the course of the 15 July coup attempt.[^24]

### Funeral and Burial

Ömer Halisdemir was 42 years old at the time of his martyrdom. His body was transported to his hometown, the village of Çukurkuyu in Bor district of Niğde, where he was buried.[^25]

His father Hasan Hüseyin Halisdemir’s statement during the funeral ceremony — “I raised him for the homeland; the homeland asked for him, and I gave him” — became one of the most widely cited expressions associated with Ömer Halisdemir’s martyrdom.[^26]

His grave in Çukurkuyu became a site of remembrance visited by citizens from across Türkiye. Visitors recite the Qur’an and offer prayers there.

### Legal Proceedings

The trial concerning Ömer Halisdemir’s martyrdom was held at the Ankara 14th Heavy Criminal Court. The court sentenced all 18 defendants to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of “qualified intentional murder” against Halisdemir, without applying any mitigating factors.[^27]

All defendants were additionally sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of “attempting to overthrow the constitutional order.”[^28] For Ahmet Muhammed Demirci, Ali Güreli, Ali Solmaz, Cemal Güleç, Cihat İbrahim Yörük, Erhan Almaz, Erkan Kütükçü, Furkan Aslanbay, Gökay Engin, Halit Çelik, Harun Topbaş, İsmail Çınar, and Mihrali Atmaca, their sentences were converted to life imprisonment based on their conduct after the crime.[^29]

No mitigating factors were applied to Fatih Şahin, Ahmet Kara, Hasan Aksoy, Hüseyin Oğuz, and Mehmet Bilge.[^30] Thus, these five defendants received two aggravated life sentences each, while the other thirteen received one aggravated life sentence and one life sentence each.[^31] The verdict was confirmed by the Ankara Regional Court of Justice.[^32]

The court acquitted the defendants of charges of “attempted qualified intentional murder” against Master Sergeant İsmail Oğuz, who was injured during the incident, citing insufficient evidence to prove the crime.[^33]

Regarding the charges related to the martyrdom of Master Sergeant Nedim Şahin at the headquarters, the court ruled that the actions of İsmail Çınar and Mihrali Atmaca constituted legitimate self-defense and acquitted them of these charges.[^34]

The court also ordered the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the legal status of Ahmet Kemal Yılmaz, Barış Batmaz, Sedat Güneş, Özer Demirtaş, Fatih Kaftancı, Yavuz Özdemir, Can Berhan, and Volkan Yaman, who were assessed as having acted alongside Semih Terzi.[^35]

### Preserving His Memory

Following his martyrdom, Ömer Halisdemir’s name was given to schools, streets, avenues, and public institutions across various cities in Türkiye.[^36] Educational institutions in Ankara, Manisa, Kahramanmaraş, İzmir, and Istanbul adopted his name.[^37]

*The Site Where Ömer Halisdemir Was Martyred (Anadolu Ajansı)*

The name of Niğde University was changed to **Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University** to honor his memory.[^38]

The area at the entrance of the Special Forces Command where Halisdemir was martyred was placed under protection. The spot where his blood fell was sealed with a special glass panel, and a monument was erected in his name.[^39] This site has become one of the places where military and official visitors offer prayers in remembrance.

His grave in Çukurkuyu is visited on the anniversaries of 15 July by citizens, military personnel, public officials, and representatives of civil society organizations. Former Special Forces Commander Zekai Aksakallı also visits Halisdemir’s grave and meets with his family.[^40]

### The Poem “30 Birds”

Poet Dursun Ali Erzincanlı wrote a poem titled **“30 Birds”**, recounting Ömer Halisdemir’s actions on the night of 15 July and his martyrdom.[^43] In the poem, Halisdemir’s acceptance of the order, his intervention against Terzi, and his martyrdom are narrated through a speaker addressing his father.

The phrase “30 Birds” in the poem’s title derives from the poet’s symbolic transformation of media reports stating that Halisdemir was shot 30 times into the image of birds.[^44] The music for the poem’s video was composed by Taner Demiralp.[^45]

### His Family in the Years Following

Ömer Halisdemir’s mother, Fadimana Halisdemir, fell ill in Niğde in March 2017 and was hospitalized. Despite medical interventions, she passed away. Her funeral was held at the cemetery in Çukurkuyu, beside her son’s grave.[^46]

His daughter, Elif Nur Halisdemir, chose a military career. On 15 August 2025, she completed the 39th Term Basic Officer and Officer Mindset Training Program and received her commission as a second lieutenant.[^47]

Second Lieutenant Elif Nur Halisdemir was assigned to the Special Forces Command, the same unit where her father served for years, and was awarded the maroon beret.[^48]

### His Place in Collective Memory

Ömer Halisdemir’s name has become synonymous with the military resistance against the FETÖ-affiliated coup attempt of 15 July 2016. His willingness to carry out the order given to him—fully aware it would lead to martyrdom—and his prevention of the Special Forces Command from falling under the control of the coup plotters form the foundation of his place in the national memory.[^49]

The naming of universities, schools, streets, and public institutions after him; the erection of a monument at the site of his martyrdom; the commemorative ceremonies held at his grave; and the transformation of his life into artistic works such as poetry have ensured the transmission of Halisdemir’s legacy to future generations.
