### **Life**

**Diana Frances Spencer,** was born into the established Spencer family of the British aristocracy. Her family was closely connected to the royal family; Diana’s grandmother Ruth Roche was one of Queen Elizabeth’s ladies-in-waiting. She spent her childhood at Park House near Sandringham. [Mother](/en/detay/anne-749984/llms.txt) and father’s divorce exposed Diana at a young age to the process of marital separation, after which she continued her education at various boarding schools. During her youth, she worked as a childcare provider and nursery school teacher.

She received her early education at Riddlesworth Hall School, a boarding school in Norfolk. She then attended West Heath Girls’ School, one of the leading schools for young girls. Throughout her schooling, while her academic performance was average, she was more actively involved in sports and music [like](/en/detay/gibi-749510/llms.txt) other areas. In 1978, she briefly attended the Institut Alpin Videmanette in Switzerland. Afterward, she returned to London and worked as an assistant teacher at a nursery school. This period marked one of her first experiences of direct interaction with the public.

### **Entry into the Royal Family and Titles**

Diana began a relationship with Prince Charles of Wales in 1980 and became engaged on 24 [February](/en/detay/subat-748380/llms.txt) 1981. She officially joined the royal family with their wedding at St Paul’s Cathedral on 29 [July](/en/detay/temmuz-748429/llms.txt) 1981, assuming the title of **“Princess of Wales”**. The wedding was watched on television by an estimated 750 million people worldwide. She also held the titles of **“Duchess of Cornwall,” “Countess of Rothesay,” and “Baroness Carrick”**. The couple had two children from their marriage: **Prince William (1982) and Prince Henry (Harry) (1984)**.

By the late 1980s, marital difficulties became public knowledge. The couple began living separately in 1992 and were officially divorced on 28 [August](/en/detay/agustos-748432/llms.txt) 1996. After the divorce, Diana lost the title of **“Her Royal Highness”** but continued to use the title **“Princess of Wales”**.

### **Charitable Work and Social Contributions**

[Princess Diana](/en/detay/prenses-diana-0fcd8/llms.txt) broke from the royal family’s traditional protocols by establishing a more direct and [genuine](/en/detay/samimi/llms.txt) connection with the public. Her interactions with AIDS patients, her support for the campaign to ban landmines, and her work with the homeless brought her humanitarian side to the forefront. Princess Diana gained public attention through her warm relationship with the people and her charitable activities. At a time when prejudice against HIV/AIDS was widespread, she drew attention by physically touching people living with the disease. These actions played a significant role in raising awareness about AIDS. She also attracted public attention through her contact with leprosy patients. Diana’s handshake with HIV/AIDS patients was seen as a symbolic [step](/en/detay/adim-2/llms.txt) in breaking down prejudices surrounding the [illness](/en/detay/hastalik-749643/llms.txt).

She also supported efforts to clear landmines and ban cluster munitions. In 1997, she walked through a minefield in Angola to draw attention to the issue. Among the organizations she supported were **AIDS Crisis Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Leprosy Mission, and National Aids Trust** [among others](/en/detay/yer-2/llms.txt).

She collaborated with numerous charitable organizations active in areas such as child health, homelessness, [substance](/en/detay/madde-2/llms.txt) abuse, and elderly care. Particularly after leaving the royal family, her independent social [responsibility](/en/detay/sorumluluk-3/llms.txt) initiatives attracted widespread attention.

Diana, known internationally as **“The People’s Princess”**, became a fashion icon due to her beauty, style, and elegance. However, throughout her life, her private life was constantly under scrutiny because of intense media attention.

### **Death and Funeral**

On 31 August 1997, Diana died in a car crash in [Paris](/en/detay/paris-4/llms.txt) while attempting to evade paparazzi. Her friend Dodi Al-Fayed and driver Henri Paul also lost their lives in the accident. The incident occurred in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris. After the crash, intense public debate followed. Eyewitnesses stated that the crash was caused by the couple being pursued by a group of paparazzi.

Her death was met with profound grief worldwide. **Diana’s funeral,** held in London on 6 [September](/en/detay/eylul-748434/llms.txt) 1997, was broadcast globally and viewed by approximately **2.5 billion people**. The ceremony at **Westminster Abbey** was attended by numerous political and religious leaders, celebrities, and members of the public. Diana was buried on a private island within the grounds of Althorp House, the Spencer family estate.

Diana’s legacy continues through her children, Prince William and Prince Harry. Both princes have taken up their mother’s humanitarian causes and continue to uphold her values.

### **Lesser-Known Aspects**

- As a child, Diana wanted to become a ballerina but was unable to realize this dream due to her tall stature.
- She learned to play the guitar and took ballet lessons.
- Even before her marriage, she was a figure of public interest, but her marriage to Charles transformed her into a global icon.

### **Legacy and Social Impact**

Princess Diana’s life and work have been studied extensively in both public discourse and academic research long after her death. Her sensitivity to social inequality, her efforts to raise awareness about illnesses, and her direct relationship with the public established a new model of representation within the royal family. Diana’s children, Prince William and Prince Harry, have actively continued the social responsibility initiatives begun by their mother.
