Ramadan

Origin

The word Ramadan entered Turkish from the Arabic word ramaḍān (رمضان). This word is derived from the Arabic root rmḍ, and is formed from the word ramaḍ, meaning “dry heat,” following the faʿalān pattern. In pre-Islamic Arabic calendars, it referred to the month corresponding to July–August, while in the Islamic calendar it denotes the ninth month.

Uses

• Religious use: Refers to the ninth month of the Hijri calendar and the act of fasting observed during this month.
• Calendrical use: Used to denote dates according to the lunar calendar (e.g. “1447 Ramadan”).
• Sociocultural use: Associated with traditions such as iftar, suhoor, tarawih, and mahya.
