Reciprocity

Origin

The term derives from the Arabic root ḳbl, meaning side or direction, and is borrowed from the word muḳābala(t) (مقابلة), meaning “encounter” or “reciprocity.” This word is the third verbal noun (masdar) in the mufāˁala(t) form of the Arabic verb ḳabala (قَبَلَ), which means “to face” or “to turn toward.”

• Religious and Sufi Literature: Used to describe Islamic recitation programs, mutual recitation among memorizers of the Quran, and the gatherings of dervishes performing dhikr or sema ceremonies.

• Philology and Textual Criticism: Serves as a technical term for the process of comparing manuscript copies with original texts to identify and correct errors.
