Red Crescent Week

Red Crescent Week, observed annually between October 29 and November 4, is an awareness campaign organized to inform the public about the founding purpose, areas of activity, and humanitarian aid efforts of the Turkish Red Crescent, to promote awareness of Red Crescent principles, and to strengthen feelings of mutual aid and solidarity. Throughout this week, celebrated nationwide, the historical development, fundamental principles, and volunteer-based activities of the Red Crescent are introduced to the public.

History

Red Crescent Week is a week rooted in the founding of the Turkish Red Crescent and the history of its humanitarian aid activities. The Turkish Red Crescent was established on June 11, 1868 under the name “Society for the Assistance of Wounded Soldiers” and shortly thereafter adopted the name “Ottoman Hilal-i Ahmer Society.” During the Republic era, the institution’s name was changed to “Turkish Red Crescent Society.” Its founding aims to provide assistance to those in need during extraordinary circumstances such as war, disaster, and epidemic, without regard to religion, language, race, or nationality.

Red Crescent Week was first celebrated in 1943 and has since been observed annually between October 29 and November 4 through various activities.^【1】 During the week, the Red Crescent’s activities, humanitarian mission, and volunteer ethos are promoted, and its fundamental principles—humanity, impartiality, independence, voluntarism, unity, and universality—are emphasized.

Red Crescent Week aims to transmit this culture of aid, particularly to children and youth; to raise awareness of the Red Crescent’s humanitarian mission; and to foster public understanding. Celebrations and Activities

Red Crescent Week is celebrated across the country through various activities organized by schools, public institutions, and Turkish Red Crescent branches. These include informational meetings, exhibitions, conferences, and poetry and composition competitions in schools, where students are taught about the founding purpose, history, and operational methods of the Red Crescent.

The Turkish Red Crescent’s headquarters and branches organize various promotional activities during the week. In 2024, Red Crescent Week was celebrated under the theme “Generations Change, Hearts Devoted to the Crescent Do Not.” As part of this, the “Red Crescent Week Street” event introduced the activities of the Red Crescent to numerous students, and exhibitions on the history and work of the Red Crescent were held at the Turkish Red Crescent Renda Köşkü Culture and Arts Center in Ankara. Several historical buildings were illuminated in red, the symbol of the Red Crescent.

Short films on the history of the Red Crescent, its volunteer activities, and humanitarian aid efforts across generations were also shared with the public throughout the week. These activities contribute to raising awareness of the Red Crescent’s humanitarian work and enhancing social consciousness.

Activities of the Turkish Red Crescent

Red Crescent Week is regarded as a period dedicated to promoting the humanitarian aid activities carried out by the Turkish Red Crescent. The Red Crescent conducts operations both domestically and internationally in the fields of disaster relief, health, social assistance, and volunteering.

In disaster relief, the Red Crescent provides tents, food, clothing, drinking water, and medical support to those affected by earthquakes, floods, fires, and other natural disasters. In the field of blood services, the Red Crescent meets a large portion of Turkey’s blood needs and organizes blood donation campaigns. Additionally, through health centers, the Red Crescent offers free medical services to individuals without social security and low-cost services to other citizens.

Under social assistance programs, the Red Crescent operates soup kitchens, social support projects, medicine aid initiatives, and targeted programs for disadvantaged groups. In the field of youth and volunteering, through Red Crescent Clubs established in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education, a culture of altruism and social responsibility is cultivated in schools. The Red Crescent also organizes educational programs for different age groups to raise disaster awareness.

National and International Aid

The Turkish Red Crescent is a humanitarian organization operating beyond national borders. It provides support to victims of disasters and war, refugees, and those in need. As a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, it collaborates with similar organizations. The Red Crescent’s income sources include membership fees, voluntary donations, and Red Crescent postage stamps. The organization uses its income to fund humanitarian aid and social solidarity activities.

The emblem of the Turkish Red Crescent Society consists of a red crescent on a white background. The white color represents the shirts of wounded soldiers, and the red crescent symbolizes bloodstains. This symbol has been internationally recognized as a sign of impartiality and humanity.
