[Robbie Coltrane](/en/detay/robbie-coltrane-4400d/llms.txt), born Anthony Robert McMillan on 30 October 1950 in Rutherglen, Scotland, was the son of Jean Ross Howie, a pianist, and Ian Baxter McMillan, a doctor and lawyer. He received the first part of his education at Glenalmond College and later studied painting at the Glasgow School of Art. His interest in the arts led him first to visual arts and then to the stage.

#### **Beginnings of Theatre and Television Career**

Coltrane’s acting career began in 1978 with the play *The Slab Boys*, staged at the Traverse Theatre in [Edinburgh](/en/detay/edinburgh-6df8b/llms.txt). In the 1980s he gained recognition on television through appearances in the comedy programmes *The Comic Strip Presents* and *Alfresco*. In 1987 he played opposite Emma Thompson in the series *Tutti Frutti*, earning his first [BAFTA](/en/detay/79th-bafta-awards-21b60/llms.txt) nomination.

Between 1993 and 1996, Coltrane portrayed criminal psychologist Dr. Edward “Fitz” Fitzgerald in the ITV series *Cracker*.
