Seyhan (District)

The oldest, largest, and most densely populated district of Adana is Seyhan, which occupies the center of the Çukurova Region with its historical past as well as its economic, social, and cultural structure place. Located on the western bank of the Seyhan River, the district derives its name from the Seyhan River, which originates in the Taurus Mountains and feeds the river. Seyhan, one of Türkiye’s most developed metropolitan districts, serves as the administrative, commercial, and cultural heart of Adana.

History

The Adana region, where Seyhan is located, has been a settlement area for many civilizations throughout history. The Hittites, Assyrians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs like ruled over these lands. The area that developed as the center of Adana falls within the current boundaries of Seyhan district.

During the Roman period, Adana became a military and commercial center hub; the Taşköprü built during this era remains one of the most important architectural legacies to survive to the present day. From the 7th century onward, the city suffered repeated stage raids and came under Turkish control in the 11th century. Adana was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in 1517 and expanded rapidly in the 19th century due to increased cotton production, with this growth concentrated especially in the Seyhan area. In 1986, Law No. 3392 came into effect, dividing the central district into Seyhan and Yüreğir, officially granting Seyhan district status.

Geographical Structure

Seyhan district is located west of the city center of Adana. The district encompasses the western part of the urban expansion that extends along both banks of the Seyhan River. To the east it borders Yüreğir district via river, to the south it borders Karataş and Yüreğir, to the west it borders Çukurova district, and to the north it borders Sarıçam district.

The district lies within the wide and fertile plain known as Çukurova (ancient Cilician Plain). With an average elevation of 20–30 meters above sea level, Seyhan has rich alluvial soils favorable for agricultural activity. The Seyhan Dam Lake is situated along the northern boundary of the district and is used for both energy production and irrigation.

Climate and Vegetation

The Mediterranean climate dominates in Seyhan district. Summers are very hot and dry, while winters are mild and rainy. Temperatures can reach up to 40°C in dry and August months, but rarely drop below 5°C in winter months. The annual average temperature is approximately 19°C.

The natural plant cover has largely been replaced by agricultural land and urban development. However, parks in the surrounding areas, riverside green zones, and the shores of dam Lake still offer local floral diversity.

Demographic Structure

According to 2024 data, the population of Seyhan district is 786,931. Of this population, 50.19% are female and 49.81% are male. The district comprises a total of 96 neighborhoods. Seyhan is the most densely populated district of Adana and also hosts a diverse array of migrant groups. Its social structure has diversified through waves of migration during the 20th century, primarily from Southeastern Anatolia, East Anatolia, and The Balkans. Additionally, Syrian refugees constitute a significant demographic group in the district.

Social Structure

Due to the diverse ethnic communities it hosts, Seyhan district has a multicultural structure. Seyhan, where Turks, Kurds, Arabs, Circassians, and migrant communities live together, possesses a rich social fabric culturally. The district hosts numerous public and private school, hospitals, university campuses (including some units of Çukurova University), and social facility. The Seyhan Municipality carries out activities to enhance social participation through cultural, artistic, and social projects.

Economic Structure

The economy of Seyhan is largely based on the industry, trade, and service sectors. The district hosts numerous small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as headquarters or branches of major industry corporations. The Wholesale Market, Metal Industry Site, Furniture Makers Site, and Koza Industry Site are key centers of economic activity in the district.

In addition, Seyhan district has many public and private service buildings, bank branches, shopping centers, and trade centers. Although agricultural production is limited within the district center, some rural neighborhoods under its jurisdiction still produce citrus, vegetables, and cotton.

Tourism Potential

Seyhan hosts numerous tourist gravity sites reflecting Adana’s cultural and historical heritage.

•Taşköprü: Built during the Roman Empire, this bridge is still in active use and is one of the world’s oldest stone bridges, serving as a symbol of the district.

•Sabancı Central Mosque: Opened in 1998, this work mosque, with a capacity of 28,500 worshippers, is one of the largest mosques in Türkiye. It is located on the banks of the Seyhan River.

•Adana Archaeology Museum: Established in 1924 and one of Türkiye’s oldest museums, this building was relocated to a new building in 2017 and equipped with modern modern exhibition techniques.

•Merkez Park: One of Türkiye’s largest urban parks, this area covers 33 hectares. With walking paths, sports zones, concert stages, and child game areas, it is a frequently chosen recreation space by the public.

•Adana State Theatre and Cultural Centers: Active theater halls, art galleries, and culture centers in the district shape Seyhan’s cultural life.

•Cultural Events and Festivals: Annually held in Seyhan district, the International Adana Golden Koza Film Festival attracts national and international artists to the district.
