Sivas Altınkale

Sivas Province is home to the Altınkale Travertines, located within the Sıcak Çermik thermal area, and is one of Türkiye’s significant geological and hydrogeological formations. The region is notable for its yellow-hued travertine terraces, formed by thermal waters rich in limonite and hematite minerals. Altınkale exhibits structural characteristics similar to the Pamukkale travertines in Denizli and covers an area of approximately 40,000 m².

Geological Features and Formation Process

The Altınkale Travertines were formed as a result of hydrothermal activity associated with the mineral-rich thermal waters of Sıcak Çermik. The temperature of the thermal water in the region is approximately 48°C and is characterized by high concentrations of limonite and hematite. These minerals interact with dissolved sulfur and other elements in the water, producing the travertines’ distinctive yellowish hue. The travertines in the area are arranged in step-like pools on the surface and have been shaped by geomorphological features and tectonic elements. These characteristics give Altınkale the qualities of an open-air geological museum.

Physical and Chemical Properties

The Altınkale travertine area consists of 21,000 m² of travertine surface and 19,000 m² of recreational space. The thermal waters constitute an important hydrogeological resource due to their high mineral content and heat capacity. The presence of limonite and hematite minerals in the chemical composition of the water at Sıcak Çermik plays a fundamental role in travertine formation. These minerals, in conjunction with calcium carbonate precipitation, determine the durability and unique color properties of the travertines.

Environmental and Structural Characteristics

The environmental structure of Altınkale is supported by the density of thermal springs and recreational areas that harmonize with the natural landscape. The region hosts numerous thermal hotels and tourism facilities, making it increasingly attractive to both local residents and tourist visitors. Additionally, tectonic movements and morphological structures in the area enhance the geological diversity of the travertines and enrich their interaction with the natural environment.

Location and Access

The Altınkale Travertines are situated approximately 24 kilometers from the center of Sivas city, within the Sıcak Çermik spa region. The area is easily accessible via road transport. Planned and developed as a thermal tourism destination, this site is a key location that enhances Sivas’s tourism potential. Furthermore, surrounding recreational areas offer visitors extensive facilities including camping tents and bungalow houses.
