[YouTube Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEK1J_Gg85g) *Those Who Did Not Fit in the Coffin: Martyr Soner Fazlıoğlu (Yeni Şafak)* ### Early Life and Education Soner Fazlıoğlu was born in the village of Kendirli in Rize as one of three sons of Kamil and Fatma Fazlıoğlu. He lived in Rize until the age of ten, after which he moved with his family to the Bandırma district of Balıkesir. He completed his secondary education at a vocational high school. After fulfilling his mandatory military service, he took the specialist non-commissioned officer examination offered by the Turkish Armed Forces and successfully enlisted as a Master Sergeant in the Gendarmerie.[^1] ### Military Career and Assignments Fazlıoğlu began his professional career as a Master Sergeant in the Gendarmerie, with his first assignment being in the Kozluk district of Batman. He was stationed at the Bekirhan Gendarmerie Outpost under the Batman Provincial Gendarmerie Command. He served in this region for approximately two and a half years until the day he lost his life.[^2] ### The 9 June 2017 Attack and Martyrdom On 9 June 2017, a terrorist attack was carried out in the Kozluk district of Batman by members of a separatist terrorist organization. On the day of the incident, after screening the vehicle of music teacher [Şenay Aybüke Yalçın](/en/detay/senay-aybuke-yalcin-58ca4/llms.txt), security forces established road control checkpoints in the area. While serving at a checkpoint at the entrance to the village of Bekirhan, Soner Fazlıoğlu and his colleague Ali Gülnar were targeted when a bomb-laden vehicle detonated. The explosion occurred around 11:45 on Friday, resulting in severe injuries to Fazlıoğlu.[^3] Fazlıoğlu was transported from the scene to Dicle University Hospital in Diyarbakır, where despite medical intervention, he could not be saved and succumbed to his injuries.[^4] ### Funeral Ceremony and Burial The first ceremony for Soner Fazlıoğlu was held at the General Galip Deniz Kışlası of the 7th Corps Command in Diyarbakır, attended by both civilian and military officials. Following the funeral prayer held after the afternoon prayer, he was laid to rest in the family cemetery/martyrs’ graveyard in the village.[^6] ### Preservation of His Memory The name of Soner Fazlıoğlu has been given to an educational institution located in the village of Bekirhan in the Kozluk district of Batman, the area where he served.
