Although he initially received training in cinema and theatre, he turned to photography during his university years. McCurry began his journalism career with local press and quickly expanded to international platforms.

His turning point came in 1979 when, during the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan, he secretly crossed into Afghanistan from Pakistan dressed as a rebel and brought back photographs from the war zone. These images were published in major outlets such as TIME and The New York Times and launched his global recognition.

The portrait of Sharbat Gula, taken in a refugee camp in Pakistan, appeared on the cover of [National Geographic](/en/detay/national-geographic-a8625/llms.txt) in 1985. This photograph became one of the most recognized and widely reproduced images in the history of visual journalism. Seventeen years later, McCurry found Gula again and published a new series documenting her story.
