Süleyman Seyfi Öğün (b. 1959) is an academic writer and thinker known in Türkiye for his work in political theory social thought and critique of modernity. He has examined issues such as labor capitalism ideology alienation and the transformation of modern society through historical and philosophical perspectives. In addition to his academic contributions he has explored the cultural political and ethical dimensions of modernity in his essays and articles. He is regarded as one of the leading representatives of critical social thought in Türkiye.
Süleyman Seyfi Öğün was born on 14 February 1959 in Muğla. He completed his secondary education at Bursa Anatolian High School in 1977 and earned his undergraduate degree from the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences at Uludağ University in 1982. He finished his master’s studies in 1986 at Istanbul University Faculty of Political Sciences and received his PhD in political science in 1991. He became an associate professor in 1993 and a full professor in 1998. Throughout his academic career he focused on political science political philosophy and the history of political thought.
Süleyman Seyfi Öğün spent a significant portion of his academic career at the Department of Public Administration within the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences at Uludağ University where he served as a faculty member for many years. He retired from Uludağ University in 2010.
After retirement he continued his academic activities and from 2010 to 2016 served as head of the Department of International Relations and European Union Studies at the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences at Maltepe University. Since 2020 he has been a faculty member in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at Istanbul Commerce University.
Süleyman Seyfi Öğün has published numerous books articles and review essays in various journals. In addition to his academic output he has communicated his analyses of politics and society through newspaper and magazine columns. He has also appeared as a commentator on television programs addressing political and social issues particularly reaching a broad audience through intellectual and debate programs.
In recognition of his academic and intellectual contributions Süleyman Seyfi Öğün was awarded the 2025 Presidency Culture and Arts Grand Prize. This honor reflects the long-standing scholarly work he has conducted in the fields of political science and the history of political thought.
