Geographical Location and Climate

Taraklı is located approximately 65 kilometers from Sakarya city center. Situated in the inner parts of the Western Black Sea Region, the district has a rugged topography. It is surrounded by the districts of Geyve to the north, Göynük (Bolu) to the east, Eskipazar (Karabük) to the south, and Pamukova to the west. The mountainous terrain characterizing the region is shaped by valleys and rivers. These geographical features significantly affect Taraklı's climate. Bearing the typical characteristics of the Black Sea climate, summers in the district are generally mild and rainy, while winters are cold and snowy. History

Taraklı's history is proven by archaeological findings dating back to 3000 BC. Surface surveys conducted in the region reveal the existence of settlements since the Neolithic period. In ancient times, Taraklı, which had a strategic location, was part of the Bithynia Region and successively came under the rule of the Hittite, Phrygian, Roman, and Byzantine Empires. Known as "Theopolis" during the Byzantine period, Taraklı was also an important religious center for Christianity. The remains from this period showcase the historical depth of the district.

Upon entering the dominion of the Ottoman Empire, Taraklı showed significant development from this period onwards. Rising to the status of a district (kaza) in the Ottoman administrative organization, it became an important economic and cultural center due to its location on the Istanbul-Baghdad trade route. Its position on a branch of the Silk Road made Taraklı a point of interaction for different cultures, enriching the district's social and architectural structure. Structures such as the Yunus Pasha Mosque, baths, inns, and mansions built during the Ottoman period carry the splendor of that era and Taraklı's importance to the present day. After the declaration of the Republic, Taraklı was connected to Sakarya province and has largely preserved its historical texture, successfully maintaining its unique identity today.

Unique Civil Architecture

One of Taraklı's most distinctive and admirable features is its traditional wooden houses, which showcase the finest examples of Ottoman-era civil architecture. These houses, typically built as two or three stories, were brought to life using local natural materials and traditional construction techniques. The expertly used wood in the facades, including bay windows (cumba), window arrangements, and detailed wooden craftsmanship, are the aesthetic elements of these structures. The interiors of the houses also reflect the lifestyle of the period. Meticulous restoration works carried out by Taraklı Municipality and various conservation boards aim to pass these historical houses down to future generations and preserve the district's unique silhouette. The historical houses, located close to each other, and the narrow, winding cobblestone streets of the district are met with great interest by visitors.

Weaving was also an important livelihood in the past and continues to be produced using traditional methods in some workshops today. Other traditional crafts like blacksmithing also form a part of Taraklı's cultural identity. The local cuisine is enriched by the region's agricultural products and traditional cooking methods. Local delicacies such as tarhana soup, dishes made with corn flour, keşkek, and pumpkin dessert reflect the uniqueness of Taraklı cuisine. Traditional customs and rituals practiced during religious holidays, weddings, and other special occasions keep Taraklı's social and cultural fabric alive.
