Who is Terzibaba?

Terzibaba's real name is Mehmed Vehbi Efendi. This Sufi figure, who is believed to have lived in the late 18th century, was known among the people as “Terzibaba.” According to legend, he earned this nickname because he worked as a tailor and made his living from this profession. Renowned for his asceticism, piety, and modest way of life, Terzibaba came to be venerated by the local population of Erzincan. Following his death, his tomb became a frequently visited site of reverence.

Location and Architectural Features of the Tomb

The tomb is located in the city center of Erzincan, within the Terzibaba Cemetery that bears his name. Its current structure is the result of various periods of maintenance and renovation. The structure, which bears traces of classical Ottoman tomb architecture, was built with cut stone. The tomb has an octagonal plan and is covered with a dome.

The interior has a simple atmosphere. The coffin, believed to belong to Terzibaba, is placed in the direction of the mihrab. The area around the tomb has been organized, with walking areas and seating areas suitable for visitors.

Culture of Visitation

The Terzibaba Tomb is an important place of visit for the people of Erzincan. It is particularly crowded during candle-lit nights, the month of Ramadan, and holidays. Visitors usually pray, read the Quran, and make charitable donations. The cemetery surrounding the tomb also serves as a spiritual place for the city's residents.

Restoration Process

The tomb, which had deteriorated over time, underwent a comprehensive restoration by the General Directorate of Foundations, especially in the 2000s. The restoration work aimed to preserve the original structure of the tomb; the exterior stones, dome covering, and interior layout were renovated in accordance with the original design.

“I Swear by Allah, I Will Not Invoke the Name of Allah For worldly Gain.”

Terzibaba is known among the people as a spiritual figure who uttered the phrase “I swear by Allah, I will not invoke the name of Allah for worldly gain” and thus rejected worldly interests. This saying reflects his prioritization of spiritual values and devotion to Allah over worldly values and material interests.
