During his childhood, Martin moved with his family to Italy where he grew up. From an early age he showed interest in Christianity and developed religious inclinations even before the faith was officially recognized.[^3] #### Military Service Martin joined the Roman army at approximately the age of fifteen.[^4] One of the most famous accounts from his military service is his sharing of his cloak with a beggar. The vision he experienced afterward played a decisive role in his adoption of the Christian faith.[^5] He was baptized around the age of twenty and continued his military service for some time afterward.[^6] #### Transition to Religious Life After leaving the military, Martin turned to religious life and joined the clerical class. In the 360s he lived a solitary life in Gaul and later founded communities resembling monasteries to engage in religious activities.[^7] ### Episcopate ![Image](https://cdn.t3pedia.org/media/uploads/2026/04/23/uNbQdEA811p6fIDjfAB7wCwTMAVpz30P.jpg) *Basilica of Saint Martin of Tours - by Daniel Jolivet (Flickr)* #### Becoming Bishop of Tours Martin was elected Bishop of Tours around 371.[^8] In this role his religious authority increased and he undertook efforts to spread Christianity in rural areas. #### Religious Activities During his episcopate, Martin participated in campaigns against pagan beliefs and led the construction of various places of worship. He also contributed to the spread of monastic life and initiated efforts to strengthen religious discipline.[^9] ### Death and Legacy Martin died in Candes in 397.[^10] He was buried in Tours, and his tomb quickly became a major site of pilgrimage.
