Turkish State Railways

Turkish Republic State Railways (TCDD) is the public institution responsible for national railway transportation in Türkiye. Established in 1927, TCDD is tasked with the construction, operation, and development of the country’s railway infrastructure. The institution operates under the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

Founding and Historical Development

TCDD commenced operations on 1 June 1927 as the successor to the General Directorate of the Anatolia-Baghdad Railways, which was established by Law No. 506 on 24 May 1924. The establishment of TCDD is regarded as part of the Republic’s efforts to modernize and nationalize transportation infrastructure in line with its development policies. Extensive improvements to railway lines inherited from the Ottoman era, along with the construction of new lines, enabled TCDD to play a significant role in Türkiye’s industrialization and economic development processes.

Mission and Scope of Authority

TCDD’s core responsibilities include the planning, construction, maintenance, and operation of railway infrastructure. Following regulations enacted in 2016, infrastructure management and train operations were separated; while railway infrastructure remains under TCDD, train operations are now carried out by TCDD Taşımacılık A.Ş., a subsidiary company.

TCDD also functions as a regulatory, supervisory, and guiding body within the railway transportation sector. High-Speed Train (YHT) projects, intercity conventional rail lines, and logistics center investments constitute its primary areas of focus in recent years.

Railway Network and Statistics

TCDD’s railway network is widely distributed across Türkiye. As of 2023, the total length of railway lines in Türkiye reached 13,919 kilometers, of which 2,251 kilometers are high-speed rail lines. The electrified track length is 6,722 kilometers and the signalled track length is 7,142 kilometers. TCDD also operates a comprehensive infrastructure comprising 78 stations, 155 station buildings, and over 1,200 culverts.

In freight transportation, TCDD transports approximately 38 million tons of cargo annually. According to 2022 data, 195 million passengers traveled by rail. To date, more than 80 million passengers have been transported on high-speed rail lines.

Corporate Structure and Architecture

TCDD’s corporate headquarters is the TCDD General Directorate Building located in Ankara, constructed in the 1930s. Designed by German architect Otto Ritter, the building is regarded as a symbolic structure reflecting the architectural sensibilities of its time. Its interior and exterior architecture combines elements of modern Turkish architecture with Western influences.

TCDD’s Role and Significance in Transportation

TCDD has played and continues to play a central role in Türkiye’s development policies. Railways hold a priority position in transportation strategies due to their safety, economic efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Connections between industrial zones and ports, the development of logistics centers, and participation in international railway projects such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars line are key factors reinforcing TCDD’s strategic importance.

In addition, TCDD actively contributes to society through social responsibility initiatives, museums, educational centers, and cultural events. Various publications and activities are organized to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of railway transportation.
