Vakfıkebir is a district in Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye, affiliated with Trabzon province, notable for its historical and natural beauty. It is especially known for its bread. History
Vakfıkebir's history dates back to ancient times. The first settlements in the region are estimated to go back to 2000 BC. The settlement, known as "Fol" in ancient times, was an important center during the Roman and Byzantine periods. During the Byzantine era, the region had strategic importance due to its location on trade routes. In 1461, it was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire with Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror's conquest of Trabzon. During the Ottoman period, Vakfıkebir was a district (kaza) bağlı to the Trabzon Sanjak. The district takes its name from the waqf (endowment) services provided in the region during the Ottoman period. Charitable works and endowments in the region played an important role in the district's development.
Geography and Climate
Vakfıkebir is located west of Trabzon and is established on the Black Sea coast. The district generally has a mountainous terrain together with fertile plains along the coastline. The mountains run parallel to the sea, and this situation affects the climate of the region. A typical Black Sea climate is observed. Summers are mild and rainy, while winters are mild and snowy. Receiving regular precipitation throughout the year has kept the region green. Among the important rivers of the district are Değirmendere and Yalıköy Stream.
Economy
Vakfıkebir's economy is based on agriculture, trade, and fishing. Hazelnuts, tea, corn, and various fruits are cultivated. Hazelnuts, in particular, hold an important place in the district's economy. Fishing is also a significant source of livelihood; fish like anchovy, horse mackerel, and whiting are caught.
