### **Life**

#### Birth Family and Early Education

[Victor James Osimhen](/en/detay/victor-osimhen-2977a/llms.txt) was born on 29 December 1998 in Lagos Nigeria. His family originates from Edo State. The youngest of six siblings Osimhen has two brothers and four sisters. His father Patrick Osimhen and mother Christiana Osimhen have both passed away. His mother died during his childhood and his father died in 2020 at the beginning of his professional career.

Osimhen grew up in the Olusosun area of Lagos one of Africa’s largest landfills. This roughly 100-hectare area served as a home to 500 households and received around 10,000 tons of waste daily. To support his family during childhood he sold water on the streets. While his brother Andrew sold newspapers his sister Blessing used her limited earnings to buy him football kits and boots to help him pursue his dream. Osimhen began playing football in 2010 with the youth academy of Ultimate Strikers FC Deba and played there until 2012 before joining the Ultimate Strikers Academy where he remained until 2017.

#### Personal Life

Osimhen was raised in a Christian family and frequently speaks about his faith. He has stated that he prays before matches and listens to gospel music. When he returns to Nigeria he makes a point of attending church services. He brought family members to [Napoli](/en/detay/galatasaray-2025-26-uefa-champions-league-matche-8/llms.txt)’s championship celebrations to share in the joy. He often expresses how happy he is in Istanbul with his family and daughter.

### Career Development and Key Milestones

#### **Youth National Team and International Rise**

A turning point in Osimhen’s career came at the 2015 [FIFA U-17 World Cup](/en/detay/fifa-u-17-dunya-kupasi/llms.txt) held in Chile. Playing for the Nigeria U-17 national team he scored **10 goals** in seven matches becoming the tournament’s top scorer and leading his team to victory. He was named the tournament’s second most valuable player and shortly afterward won the **CAF Young Player of the Year** award.

Osimhen made his debut for the Nigeria senior national team in June 2017. Although he was not selected for the 2018 FIFA World Cup squad this did not deter him. He played a key role in helping Nigeria finish third at the [2019 Africa Cup of Nations](/en/detay/afrika-uluslar-kupasi-afcon-2025-a944c/llms.txt) and was one of the most important players in guiding the team to the final of the 2023 tournament. In March 2025 he scored two goals against Rwanda in World Cup qualifiers becoming Nigeria’s second all-time top scorer in national team history[^1]. In October 2025 he scored a hat-trick against Benin playing a decisive role in securing Nigeria’s place in the 2026 World Cup play-off round. As of August 2025 Osimhen has made 52 appearances for the Nigeria national team scoring 35 goals[^2].

### **Club Career**

#### **Wolfsburg and Charleroi Period**

Following his success at the U-17 World Cup Osimhen signed a pre-contract with German Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg in January 2016 and officially transferred to the club in January 2017 for €3.5 million. However he failed to meet expectations in Germany struggling with injuries and limited playing time. In August 2018 he was loaned to Belgium’s Royal Charleroi Sporting Club. There he experienced a renaissance scoring 20 goals and providing four assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. Building on this success Osimhen transferred permanently to Charleroi in July 2019 for €3.5 million and just one month later moved to France’s Lille for €22.4 million[^3].

#### **Lille and Napoli Years**

In his single season at Lille Osimhen scored 18 goals and provided six assists in 38 appearances becoming one of Europe’s most promising young strikers. His performances attracted the attention of Italian giants Napoli and in September 2020 he transferred to [Napoli](/en/detay/napoli-2/llms.txt) for a fee of **€77.5 million** becoming one of the club’s most expensive signings. During his four seasons with Napoli he set numerous records. The 2022-23 season was historic for him as he formed a lethal partnership with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia helping the team win the [Serie A](/en/detay/63rd-agricultural-turkey-cup-final-884a6/llms.txt) title for the first time in 33 years. That same season he became the **first African player** to win the **Serie A top scorer** title with 26 goals. This performance broke several records:

- He became the African player with the most goals in a single Serie A season (26 goals; the previous record of 21 was held by Samuel Eto’o)[^4].
- He joined Argentine legend Diego Maradona as the only players to score at least 10 goals in four consecutive seasons for Napoli.
- He broke [Cristiano Ronaldo’s](/en/detay/cristiano-ronaldo-2/llms.txt) record of 2.56 meters for highest jump to head a ball by achieving a leap of 2.58 meters[^5],
- He became the first player since Zlatan Ibrahimović to win the league title and finish as top scorer in the same season.

Osimhen made 133 appearances for Napoli scoring 76 goals and providing 18 assists[^6]. In 2023 he won the Africa Player of the Year award becoming the first Nigerian to do so since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999. That same year he finished eighth in the Ballon d’Or rankings becoming the first Nigerian to enter the top 10[^7].

#### **Galatasaray Era**

Osimhen joined Galatasaray on loan for the 2024-25 season and has stated that he is happy living in Istanbul with his family and daughter. He credited his decision to join the club to his conversation with the head coach saying "**As a father a coach and a human being what they said deeply moved me**"[^8]. He also emphasized that Didier Drogba who previously played for Galatasaray is a hero to him.

In 30 Süper Lig appearances he scored 26 goals and provided five assists becoming the league’s top scorer and playing a critical role in Galatasaray’s domestic double. Across all competitions he reached 37 goals delivering an impressive performance. Following this success on 30 July 2025 Galatasaray announced they had purchased Osimhen’s registration from Napoli for **€75 million** and signed him to a contract until 2029. Under the agreement he will receive a guaranteed net annual salary of €15 million a €1 million loyalty bonus and a €5 million image rights fee[^9]. This transfer became the most expensive in Turkish football history. Osimhen turned down higher financial offers to remain at Galatasaray.

As of 6 December 2025 Osimhen has made 69 official appearances for Galatasaray scoring 48 goals contributing to approximately 30 percent of the team’s total goals. With this he has become the club’s fifth most prolific foreign goalscorer of all time[^10]. In 10 European cup matches he has scored 12 goals placing him among Galatasaray’s top foreign scorers alongside Milan Baros and Shabani Nonda. In the [UEFA Champions League](/en/detay/galatasaray-uefa-sampiyonlar-ligi-son-16-play-of-5/llms.txt) during the 2025-26 season he scored six goals in three appearances and is currently second in the competition’s scoring rankings.

Speaking about teammate Mauro Icardi Osimhen said "**Icardi is a great footballer and a great goalscorer not only for what he brings to the game but also for what he has done at Galatasaray. We have shown on the pitch how well we play together**." He emphasized team success over individual accolades[^11].

His record-breaking 2.58-meter jump to head a ball in Serie A is proof of his dominance in the air. His defensive work rate and tireless effort for the team are also vital aspects of his game. During the [2024-25 Süper Lig](/en/detay/super-lig-2024-2025-sezonu-31-hafta-sonuclari-5146/llms.txt) season he scored six of his 17 goals with headers[^12].
