Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEU)

Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University (BEU) is a public university located in the city of Zonguldak in Türkiye. The university is situated across various districts within the province, with its main campus being the Farabi Campus in Zonguldak city center.

History

Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University is a higher education institution tracing its origins to the Zonguldak School of Mining Engineering, established in 1924. The university was formally founded on 11 July 1992 by Law No. 3837 under the name Zonguldak Karaelmas University, incorporating the Zonguldak Faculty of Engineering and Zonguldak Vocational School, both previously affiliated with Hacettepe University. At its establishment, it began academic activities with units in Zonguldak city center as well as in Bartın and Karabük districts. Over time, the academic units in Bartın and Karabük were separated by subsequent laws to form the core of Bartın University and Karabük University respectively. The university’s name was changed to Bülent Ecevit University by a law enacted in 2007, and finally to Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University in 2018.

Campuses

The main campus of the university is the Farabi Campus located in Zonguldak city center. This campus hosts the university’s administrative units, faculties, central library, and sports facilities. The sports facilities include a semi-olympic swimming pool, an indoor sports hall, a fitness center, tennis courts, and open basketball and football fields. The university also hosts academic units in other locations across the province, including the Ereğli Doruk Campus and the Ereğli Kepez Campus, enabling its operations throughout Zonguldak and its districts.

International Activities

Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University implements various exchange programs and collaborations to provide international experiences for its students and academic staff. These include the Erasmus+ program facilitating student and staff mobility with institutions in Europe, the Mevlana Exchange Program enabling student and faculty exchange between higher education institutions within and outside Türkiye, and the Farabi Exchange Program promoting mobility among institutions within Türkiye. Additionally, the International Relations Unit manages internship mobility, academic staff training abroad, and the establishment of new international partnerships.

The university has signed academic, scientific, and cultural cooperation protocols with international institutions such as the University of Science and Technologies (Uzbekistan University of Science and Technology – USAT).^【1】 These protocols cover joint education at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels, student and academic staff exchange, collaborative scientific research, organization of scientific events, co-supervision of doctoral students, and development of joint curricula.

The university has achieved various accomplishments in academic, sports, and accessibility fields:

Sports-Friendly Campus Award: In the “Sports-Friendly Campus Awards” evaluation conducted jointly by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), the university ranked fourth in Türkiye.^【2】

Disability-Free University Flag Awards: In YÖK’s “Disability-Free University Awards 2023,” the university ranked fifth among Turkish universities. It was awarded the “Orange Flag” (accessibility in physical spaces) for eight units and the “Green Flag” (accessibility in education) for four units.^【3】

List of the World’s Most Influential Scientists: Six university academics received the “World’s Most Influential Scientists Award” under the scientific publication incentive program.^【4】

Mathematics Department Achievement: The Mathematics Department ranked seventh in Türkiye among universities.^【5】

International Best Publication Award: Academics from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, won the Best Publication Award at the “International Conference on Engineering Technologies 2017.”^【6】

International Scientific Presentation First Place Award: Research by academics from the Endodontics Department of the Faculty of Dentistry received the Oral Presentation First Place Award at the 16th International Turkish Endodontic Society Congress.^【7】

Startup Acceleration Program First Place Award: Students from the Faculty of Science won first place in the GO GOSB Startup Acceleration Program held at GOSB Teknopark with their project titled “Detection of Impurities in Food Products at the Molecular Level (BACTEON).”^【8】

TÜBİTAK Project Support and Patent Achievements: Eleven projects of the university received support from TÜBİTAK, and over the past two years, a total of eleven projects were granted patent registration certificates by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.^【9】

100th Anniversary March Competition First Place Award: The “100th Anniversary March,” composed and written by the Director of the State Conservatory, was awarded first place in a competition organized by the Presidency of Communication.^【10】

Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University provides facilities to support students’ academic development as well as their social and cultural activities.
