The Australorp breed was developed beginning in the 1890–1900 period when William Cook and Joseph Partington imported Orpington chickens to Australia. Australian breeders crossed them with Minorca, White Leghorn, and Langshan breeds to improve egg production. Its outstanding performance in egg-laying competitions held in 1902 secured its commercial importance success. The breed began gaining recognition in various countries in the early 1920s and was officially accepted by the American Poultry Association in 1929. It was removed from the Conservation Priority List of the Livestock Conservancy in 2023.
The Australorp chicken has a medium-sized, broad-bodied structure. Its feathers are tight-fitting and dense, typically black in color. Roosters weigh between 3 and 4 kg, while hens weigh between 2.5 and 3 kg. The head is of medium size with a red, featherless face. The comb is axe shaped and has 4 to 6 points. The earlobes are red and the eyes are dark brown. The Beak short are strong. The legs are of medium length and featherless, with color varying by strain.
The Australorp breed is notable for its egg-laying capacity. It gained fame through record-breaking performances in egg-laying competitions during the 1920s. One Australorp hen set a record by laying 364 eggs in 365 day, achieving the world record. The average annual egg production is around 190 eggs. The eggs are light brown in color and weigh approximately 55 grams.
