Physical Structure and Sections

The Rahmi M. Koç Museum is housed in a space of approximately 27,000 square meters and consists of three main sections: the Mustafa V. Koç/Lengerhane Building, the Hasköy Shipyard, and the Open-Air Exhibition Area.

Mustafa V. Koç/Lengerhane Building

The Lengerhane Building, constructed on Byzantine foundations dating to the 12th century and later used as Ottoman-era shipyard facilities in the 18th century, is the museum’s first exhibition space. Opened to the public in 1994, this building was renamed in 2016 in honor of the late Mustafa V. Koç.

Hasköy Shipyard

The Hasköy Shipyard, located on the shores of the Haliç in Istanbul, is one of the most significant and historically important meaning components of the Rahmi M. Koç Museum. Established in 1861 by Şirket-i Hayriye for ship maintenance and repair, the shipyard marks one of the pivotal dönüm milestones in industrial history. Particularly during the Ottoman Empire, the Hasköy Shipyard played a vital role in maritime transport and became a central hub shaping Istanbul’s and the empire’s maritime connectivity.

Initially operating as a small workshop facility, the shipyard expanded over time into a major shipbuilding and repair complex. By 1910, it was equipped with an electric-powered capstan and played a crucial role in the maintenance and construction of steamers for the Istanbul City Hatları İşletmesi. In 1937, the Kocataş steamer and in 1938, the Sarıyer steamer were built here, establishing the shipyard as an essential part of the city’s inland maritime transport network.

Over time, the shipyard underwent various structural modifications and operated under different administrations activity. It remained actively in use until the 1980s, after which it was abandoned. In 1996, it was acquired by the Rahmi M. Koç Museum and Culture Foundation and underwent extensive restoration before being integrated into the museum in 2001. Thanks to this restoration, the historical structures of the shipyard were preserved and adapted for museum use. Today, the Hasköy Shipyard is not only a space that illuminates industrial history but also holds major significance in the field of industrial archaeology.

With its inclusion in the Rahmi M. Koç Museum, the Hasköy Shipyard functions as a vital educational and exhibition space for studying the Industrial Revolution, transportation, and maritime history. The objects displayed here enable visitors to learn about the technological advancements and innovations of the era in the field of maritime transport. The museum’s broad collection, which includes submarines, steamships, and railways, provides visitors with invaluable insights into industrial history.

Additionally, collections such as “Living Past” and “Maritime” in the Hasköy Shipyard offer visitors the opportunity to observe how historic ship engines and motors operated. This forms part of the museum’s interactive character, encouraging visitors to engage directly with the objects to enhance their learning experience.

Open-Air Exhibition Area

This area, stretching from Hasköy Street to the Haliç, serves as an open-air museum displaying large-scale objects. Classic automobiles, massive locomotives, aircraft, and submarines are exhibited here.

International Recognition and Awards

The Rahmi M. Koç Museum has received numerous prestigious awards, including the International Council of Museums Special Award (1996) and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Grand Award (2001). These honors recognize the museum’s leadership and contributions to museology both in Türkiye and internationally.
