Ali Pasha Mosque (Tokat)
Tokat’s center hosts a magnificent structure that stands as if it were a giant seal stretching from the past to the present: Ali Paşa Camii. How did people living hundreds of years ago, without machines like those we have today, manage to construct such enormous domes? Let us uncover the mysteries of this historic building together!
Who Built Ali Paşa Camii and When?
This beautiful mosque was constructed in 1572, approximately 450 years ago, by Ali Paşa. Although there are differing views on Ali Paşa’s identity, it is well established that he was a highly significant administrator during the Ottoman period. Together with its adjacent tomb and bathhouse, the mosque forms a large “külliye,” or complex of buildings. In the tomb located in the mosque’s courtyard, Ali Paşa, his wife, and his son Mustafa Bey rest together. This structure is a precious legacy passed down to us from our ancestors.【1】
What Are the Architectural Features of the Mosque?
Ali Paşa Camii is a remarkably sturdy structure built entirely of precisely cut stone. Its most striking feature is the massive dome with a diameter of exactly 11.5 meters. This enormous dome creates a vast and spacious interior.
At the entrance, there is an ornate doorway known as a “taçkapı,” made of two-colored marble. Inside, the mihrap (the niche where the imam leads prayers) and the minber (the stepped pulpit from which sermons are delivered) are also crafted from finely worked marble.

How Was the Historic Structure Restored?
Over time, the mosque deteriorated and suffered damage from earthquakes. Between 2016 and 2020, it underwent major restoration. During these works, stones were cleaned using a special technique called “micro-sanding,” restoring the mosque to a pristine condition as if it had just been built. Additionally, the lead cladding on the dome and the mosque’s lighting system were completely renewed.
🕒 Time Travel:
Let us travel back approximately 450 years... At that time, people cultivated barley and wheat in fields and practiced animal husbandry. Even then, they built this mosque with such a high level of artistic skill, leaving it as a gift to the future—to us.
