📜 History
Ardahan province has a history of approximately 3,000 years and acquired its name after coming under the control of the Arda Turks, a branch of the Khazar Turks, in 628. It was conquered by Sultan Alp Arslan in 1068. On 29 May 1555, it was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire and formed the “ARDAHAN SANCAK” until the Turkish-Russian War of 1877. Following the Treaty of San Stefano resulting from the 1877–1878 war, Ardahan, along with Batum and Kars, was ceded to Russian rule as war reparations. The 40-year Russian administration ended with the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk signed on 3 March 1918, when Ardahan was returned to the Ottoman State. After the Armistice of Mudros signed on 30 October 1918, our forces withdrew and the region fell under enemy occupation. Ardahan was liberated from enemy occupation on 23 February 1921. In 1921 it became a district under the administrative status of mutasarrıflık and was attached to Kars province as a district in 1926. On 27 May 1992, it became a province.
