BILAL-I HABESHI

Bilal was born into slavery in Mecca. His mother, Hamama, and his father, Rabah, were also enslaved. At that time, enslaved people lived under harsh conditions and had no freedom. Bilal was known for his diligence and honesty. But most importantly, his heart always sought the truth. Have you ever mustered the courage to speak the truth, even when nothing terrified you more?

Bilal’s childhood was spent in the service of a wealthy family. Yet he never lost his love for freedom or his strong character. These qualities were the first signs that he would become a great man.

Bilal heard our Prophet convey the message that God is One. This message touched his heart deeply, for he had always despised idol worship. He immediately embraced Islam, and this decision transformed his life entirely. But this choice was not easy for him. When his master learned that Bilal had become a Muslim, he became furious and tried to punish him. In these difficult moments, Bilal held firm to his faith, repeating, “Allah is One!”

Our Prophet was deeply moved upon hearing of the hardships Bilal endured. He instructed his close companion Abu Bakr to free Bilal. Abu Bakr purchased Bilal and granted him his freedom. From then on, Bilal stood beside our Prophet as a free Muslim. This marked a new beginning for him. Now free, Bilal lived his faith with even greater conviction.

After the migration to Medina, Muslims sought a way to announce the times of prayer. One day, a companion saw a vision of the call to prayer. Our Prophet asked Bilal to give the call, for his voice was exceptionally beautiful and powerful. Bilal climbed the minaret and delivered the first adhan. From that day forward, every prayer time, Bilal’s voice united the Muslim community. That voice brought peace and hope to all who heard it.

While giving the adhan, Bilal added the phrase, “Prayer is better than sleep.” This phrase energized people for the morning prayer.

Bilal was not only a muezzin; he was also a brave warrior. He fought alongside our Prophet in the battles of Badr, Uhud, and the Trench. His strength and loyalty served as an example to all. Bilal always defended the truth and never abandoned his companions.

After the death of our Prophet, Bilal was deeply grieved. Remaining in Medina became too painful for him, so he moved to Damascus. There, he continued to support Muslims and recited the adhan. One day, he saw our Prophet in a dream and returned to Medina to give the adhan once more. This moment moved many people deeply. Bilal passed away in Damascus in the year 641.

Bilal ibn Rabah was born in Mecca approximately 1,400 years ago. At that time, slavery was widespread, but Bilal’s faith and courage helped transform those difficult times. His story spread Islam’s message of equality to the world.
