Çankırı Clock Tower
Çankırı Clock Tower is one of the city’s most significant and historic structures. As its name suggests, it is a tall tower built to announce and display the time to the city’s residents. In an era before clocks were widespread, people regulated their work and appointments by listening to the bell sounds of such towers.
When Was the Tower Built?
This tower was constructed approximately 160 years ago, during the Ottoman Empire, in the 1860s under Sultan Abdülhamid II. The clock mechanism was specially made in Switzerland and transported to Çankırı. The tower was later moved from its original location to a more suitable site within the city.

What Does the Clock Tower Look Like?
The Çankırı Clock Tower stands approximately 15 meters high, equivalent to the height of a five-story building. It is built on a square base and features a rectangular shaft rising vertically.
At the top of the tower is a balcony encircling the structure. On all four sides are large clocks with circular dials, allowing people from every direction of the city to see the time. The summit is covered by a lead-clad dome. Inside, wooden stairs provide access to the upper levels.

Why Is It Important?
The clock tower is not merely a structure for telling time; it also represents the city’s history, architecture, and connection to its past. Locally, it is known as the “Çan Saati” or Bell Clock, because it chimes at every half-hour and full hour, broadcasting its sound across the city and reminding people of the passage of time. Just as players in a game know their turn, the tower symbolizes the orderly rhythm of time.
