History and Significance of the Konak
The konak is named after Gazi Ahmet Muhtar Paşa, one of the prominent commanders of the Ottoman Army. The title “Gazi” was bestowed upon individuals who achieved distinction in battle.
A Journey Through Time
During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, known in history as the “93 Harbi” and occurring approximately 150 years ago, the konak played a significant role. As the commander of Ottoman forces on the Caucasus Front, Gazi Ahmet Muhtar Paşa used this building as his command center, or karargah. A karargah is the place where military units are directed and war strategies are planned.

What Are the Architectural Features of the Konak?
The Gazi Ahmet Muhtar Paşa Konağı generally has a two-story, near-square rectangular layout. Its architecture reflects the characteristics of civilian Ottoman residences of that era.
Among its notable architectural details is a wooden balcony adorned with plant motifs on the exterior façade. Additionally, the konak features a traditional heating system called peç, which was used to warm the interior spaces. Peç is a type of wall-embedded stove unique to Anatolia.
